Why Some Women Are Shaving Their Faces

We all have things we wish we could change about ourselves, and there are some women out there who are taking matters into their own hands. Many women who have unwanted facial hair are over the fuss about it and have decided to use their razors above their necks. In recent interviews, a number of celebrities have actually opened up about this very topic and have admitted to shaving their face, neck and upper lip as often as everyday.

CHECK THIS OUT: The Best Way To Remove Unwanted Facial Hair

Kate Somerville, celebrity facialist, said in a recent interview with The New York Times, “I hate to say this, but personally I get hairs above my upper lip, and have forever. Initially I did it because of the hair, but then I noticed that it was a great exfoliant and that my makeup went on a lot better.” This is interesting! So apparently, there is more to shaving of the face than hair removal.

Shaving the face is similar to Dermaplaning, the fancy technical term for running a sharp blade over the face. Dr. Elizabeth Hale, a dermatologist at the Laser and Skin Surgery Center of New York, says, “Dermaplaning is just a very simple physical or mechanical method of exfoliation, which helps to remove dead skin cells and give your face a brighter complexion.”

She goes on to say, “Since it removes some vellus hairs [the baby-fine hairs on your face], it can make the skin feel smoother. But I think it also taps into this whole new field in dermatology which is all about increasing efficacy and penetration of topical ingredients.”

So ladies are you up for the task? I don’t know about you, but I’m not ready to sign up for another added piece to my weekly regimen, though the proclaimed benefits are tempting! However, here are some tips if you do decide you want to give it a go:

1. Use the right razor.

For facial shaving it is suggested to stay away from the cheap razors that you might use on your legs. The skin on your face is very sensitive and needs something that works a bit better. A blade with a curve is best, such as the  Touch N Brow.

2. Have a damp face.

Many dermatologists recommend wetting the face first in order to soften the skin and hair, then using some type of gel or lotion to help the razor glide across the skin smoothly.

3. Use a special technique.

Most lady shavers just simply suggest pulling the skin taut, shaving in downward short strokes.

4. After-shave care matters.

Moisturize! Just like any other part of your body, after a hair removal session your skin needs a good moisturizing. Shaving takes a layer of the skin off, and therefore, your skin is left susceptible to dryness.
