No matter what age a beloved friend or someone you feel close to passes away, it can sometimes leave you shocked and heartbroken. But many emotions and feelings are heightened when they’re gone at a young age. Several well-known Black entertainers died in their 50s after battling serious health conditions that disproportionately affect Black men.
From heart disease and diabetes to kidney failure and stroke, understanding the warning signs could mean the difference between life and death.

DMX was just 50 years old when he died on April 9, 2021.
The legendary rapper suffered a heart attack that led to a catastrophic lack of oxygen to his brain. While reports indicated substance use played a role, experts note that heart disease remains one of the leading causes of death among Black men.
Black men are more likely to develop high blood pressure at younger ages than other racial groups. Uncontrolled hypertension significantly increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, and kidney disease.

Rapper Black Rob died in 2021 at age 52.
The former Bad Boy Records artist had suffered several strokes, diabetes-related complications, and kidney failure in the years leading up to his death. In emotional videos shared before his passing, he spoke openly about his declining health.
Black Americans are nearly four times more likely to experience kidney failure than White Americans, largely because of higher rates of diabetes and hypertension.

Legendary rapper, Heavy D died suddenly in 2011 at age 44, but his story remains relevant because many Black men face similar risks during their 40s and 50s.
An autopsy revealed that the rapper and actor suffered from a pulmonary embolism—a blood clot that traveled to his lungs.
Blood clots often develop without obvious symptoms until they become life-threatening.

Best known as Tommy Strawn on the hit TV show Martin, Tommy Ford died at age 52 after suffering a ruptured abdominal aneurysm.
An aneurysm occurs when a weakened blood vessel bulges and eventually bursts.
Many aneurysms produce no symptoms until they become emergencies.

Michael K. Williams, known for his iconic role in The Wire and Boardwalk Empire, died at age 54.
Although his death was related to an accidental drug overdose, Williams had been candid about struggles with depression, trauma, and addiction.
Mental health conditions can have profound effects on physical health, increasing the risk of heart disease, stroke, and premature death.

Prince Markie Dee of the legendary hip-hop group The Fat Boys died at age 52.
Reports indicated that complications related to diabetes and other chronic health conditions contributed to his declining health.
Black adults are significantly more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes, making regular screenings especially important.
DJ Clark Kent, one of hip-hop’s most respected DJs and producers, died in October 2024 at age 58 after a private three-year battle with colon cancer. He was known for helping launch the careers of artists such as Jay-Z, The Notorious B.I.G., and Mariah Carey.
His passing brought renewed attention to colorectal cancer, a disease that has been increasing among Black Americans and younger adults in recent years.
Colon cancer is one of the most preventable cancers when detected early. Regular colonoscopies can identify and remove precancerous polyps before they become life-threatening. Health experts recommend that most adults begin screening at age 45, and earlier for those with a family history.

Shock G, the creative force behind Digital Underground and the iconic character Humpty Hump, died in 2021 at age 57. The medical examiner later determined that his death resulted from an accidental overdose involving fentanyl, methamphetamine, and alcohol.
While Shock G’s death was not caused by a chronic disease, it highlights another health challenge affecting many Black men: untreated mental health struggles, substance use disorders, and the dangers of illicit drugs contaminated with fentanyl.
Even small amounts of fentanyl can be deadly. Because the synthetic opioid is frequently mixed into other substances without the user’s knowledge, accidental overdoses have risen dramatically across the United States.

Multitalented R&B soul singer D’Angelo (Michael Archer) died in 2025 at age 51 after privately battling pancreatic cancer.
Risk factors for pancreatic cancer include the following:
Possible signs of pancreatic cancer include jaundice, pain, and weight loss.
These and other symptoms may be caused by pancreatic cancer. Other conditions may cause the same symptoms. A doctor should be consulted if any of the following problems occur:
10. Fatman Scoop was just 53 years old when he died of heart disease, collapsing on stage during a show in Connecticut in 2024.
11. Rapper Magoo, famously known for his work alongside superproducer Timbaland, was just 50 when he passed away from a heart attack in 2023.
12. Irv Gotti, producer and music executive behind Murder Inc. Records, cited for helping to spotlight talents like Ja Rule and Ashanti, even Jay-Z and DMX, was 54 when he passed from a diabetes-related stroke in February 2025.
Black men continue to experience shorter life expectancy and higher rates of preventable disease than many other groups in America. Heart disease, stroke, diabetes, kidney disease, and certain cancers remain major threats.
One of the most dangerous myths about men’s health is that feeling “fine” means you’re healthy. High blood pressure, kidney disease, diabetes, and even some forms of heart disease can progress silently for years before symptoms appear.
The stories of DMX, Black Rob, Prince Markie Dee, Tommy Ford, and Michael K. Williams serve as powerful reminders that health challenges don’t discriminate based on fame, wealth, or success.
For Black men, regular checkups, knowing your family history, staying physically active, and addressing symptoms early may be some of the most important investments you ever make—not just for yourself, but for the loved ones who depend on you.
