Do Pheromones in Perfume Really Work?

Perfume bottle and pink rose

If you are a lover of perfume, you may have noticed that more and more pheromone-infused fragrances are making their way to the shelves. They claim to make you more sexually attractive and promise to be your next favorite aphrodisiac. Well, it’s time to find out if this is true or not, because if so, we already know what your next gift to yourself needs to be!

There are many experts and studies that go back and forth on whether or not these products do anything more than make you smell delicious. There is quite a bit of gray area in the idea that humans share the commonly known attribute of pheromonal attraction that animals have. According to a study published by the National Institute of Health, “a pheromone is comprised of one or only a few chemicals,  has well-defined behavioral or endocrine effects, and is little influenced by learning. To date, no chemicals have been isolated in humans that meet such criteria.”

But according to a study done by Noam Sobel, a neurobiologist at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel this may not be the case. His study involved having women watch a sad movie scene, collected their tears and placed samples of the unidentified fluid under men’s noses. The doctors that were part of the study hypothesized that the scent of the tears would elicit empathy among the men, but this was not the case. What they did find is that the scent of the tears did reduce the men’s sexual arousal and testosterone levels.  Or as Dr. Sobel said, “apparently the tears sent a message that romance was off the table.”

I think the jury may still be out on this one folks! Much like how dogs like to mark their territories, many health and beauty companies are trying to figure out ways for you to mark yours. Only problem is real pheromones don’t have a scent, and believe me after cleaning up after a dog for a few years, you should be glad they don’t!

Most of our natural secretions don’t give off the same “magical power” as animals do. So how are these pheromone- infused scents even created, you may ask? Well, they are chemically produced  with extracts from animals and insects. So before you run out and spend a pretty penny on that sexually promising perfume, just know that the only thing that may be more attracted to you are the flies.

But hey, I say anything is worth a shot! If it smells good it may make you feel more confident to go talk to that girl or guy you’ve been dreaming about at work. I know when I wear a scent that smells delish, I feel sexier. If nothing else the fragrance may have an affect on your mood, which in turn could give you more action. And if all else fails, just stop wearing deodorant, see if that works!
