Expecting? Here Are 6 Things You Need To Do First

You’ve missed your period and have taken 4 at-home pregnancy tests but you’re still in disbelief! You just might be pregnant so get ready to make some major decisions.

Think you’re expecting? Check out these 6 things you need to do first:

1. Confirm It

Featured on BlackDoctor

Yes, at-home tests are 99% accurate but that is solely depending on how far along you are before you take the test. If you haven’t missed your period yet, it could be too soon for your HCG levels to detect a baby. If you do get a positive from your at-home test it’s imperative that you get a confirmation from your healthcare provider. It’s a simple test much like the at-home test, but medical grade so it’s 100% accurate. They’ll give you a Proof of Pregnancy sheet for your insurance then schedule you for your first ultrasound.

2. Take Some Alone Time

This is huge news! Whether it was unexpected or planned, getting pregnant is a life-changing situation. Take a day or

two to really sit back and think about the options your doctor discussed with you. Picture yourself as a mother and consider what life will be like with a baby. Will you be financially and emotionally fit to raise a child?

3. Tell Your Partner

Once you’ve weighed all of your options, notify your partner. If you’re in a committed relationship, find a cool way to tell your significant other. If you’re not, sit down face to face with your partner and discuss your options along with your final decision.

4. Start Taking Prenatal Vitamins

Whether you want to keep your baby or look into adoption, the health of the baby is vital. Research prenatal vitamins, choose one that you feel comfortable with and start taking them immediately. This will ensure your baby is getting all the essential nutrients that it needs to grow and to be healthy.

5. Look Into Healthcare Options

There are options out there for everyone and for every situation. If you don’t have healthcare and have

low-income, Medicaid is available to you at free of cost. This means no co-pays, no hospital bills, and you can even have cash assistance for vital needs like prenatal vitamins and food. If you do have healthcare, call your provider and ask about what will be covered for prenatal care, c-section, hospital stays, birthing, and afterbirth costs.

6. Schedule Free Birthing Consultations

Now you have to find the perfect center or hospital where you’d like to deliver your baby. This is a crucial step as this will be your doctor throughout your entire pregnancy, birth, after birth, and infancy check-ups. Many places will schedule you for a free walkthrough of their facilities and give you a breakdown of costs along with payment plans. Take your time, but also do your research and choose wisely!
