Having complexion or acne woes? Facial peels may be the route you should take. If you don’t know anything or much about facial peels, the thought of them may scare you….but you may be surprised they aren’t as scary as they sound! According to Dr. Debra Jaliman, author and one of New York’s top dermatologists, “The biggest misconception about face peels is that the skin will be burned and bright.”

The How and What

A typical facial peel acts as an exfoliant by removing the top layers of skin. This in turn speeds up cell renewal and the creation of new skin layers. Proper usage of these peels can promote fresh and smooth skin with improved texture, tone, less fine lines and clear pores. According to Dr. Jaliman, “One problem they can’t fix, contrary to popular belief is scarring. Only lasers can to do that.”

Which Peel Is For You?

The key to a successful facial peel treatment is getting the one that is best for your skin and its needs. Someone with acne prone and oily skin would use a different product than one who has dry flaky skin. For instance, acne prone skin would be best battled with a salicylic acid peel that would work to clear deeply clogged pores. It’s a very drying peel, and if done on skin that isn’t prone to oiliness it could be counterproductive.

Someone who struggles with uneven skin tone and fine lines should opt ffor a glycolic or pomegranate/pumpkin, peel. These types of peels work to smooth and hydrate the skin.  “If you have rosacea or eczema, you should…

… steer clear of peels. Because these conditions cause skin inflammation, peels only increase irritation and redness”, says Dr. Jaliman.

The Right Regimen

This is just as important as utilizing the proper peel. Everyone’s skin issues are different, and therefore, the frequency of need will vary as well. In general, those with mild to medium skin cases typically undergo a series of 3-6 peels spread across about 2-4 weeks. Those with more serious skin issues may need more frequent peels.

After Care

Following your peel you want to be very sensitive towards your skin. Pay close attention to how your skin reacts to the treatment. Whatever you do stay away from retinol. It will just make your freshly peeled skin irritated, says Dr. Jaliman. If you feel that your skin needs some added moisture, seek out products that contain hyaluronic acid and green tea. These ingredients contain both moisture and soothing properties that are perfect for post peel care.
