Healing Power Of Butter In Your Coffee (Yes, Butter)

Coffee is one of the most controversial and talked about beverages when it comes to health. Some people say it’s terrible for you, others swear by it, especially those who aren’t morning people. But the newest trend (which isn’t new) is taking coffee to a whole new level. By drinking it, reports of more energy, more clarity and sharpness of your brain, and even weight loss. That’s where putting butter in your coffee comes in (yes, butter IN your coffee).

I know what you’re thinking, but don’t knock it till you try it. Creator of what is now being called “Bulletproof Coffee,” Dave Asprey, claims that plenty of high-powered CEOs swear by the trick.

He first stumbled upon the idea when he was trekking through Tibet in 2004.

Locals handed him some yak-butter tea to help revive his energy in the high altitudes. Following years of research, he came up with his very own hot drink recipe.

After adding your coffee beans, you’re encouraged to add 1-2 tablespoons of grass-fed, unsalted butter or ghee.

Apparently, mixing this in the blender for 20-30 seconds makes it resemble a “creamy latte.”

And some real facts are supporting his case for a buttery coffee in the morning.

A recent study conducted by the National Institute of Health (NIH) found that 91% of the 60 different coffee beans tested were contaminated with mycotoxins—toxic byproducts produced by a fungus that increases inflammation and can cause disease in the liver and GI tract over time.

But grass-fed butter is rich in omega-3s, CLA, beta-carotene, antioxidants, and vitamins A, K, D & E. Not only does mixing butter in your coffee provide your body with all of these essential nutrients your body needs to thrive, but it also keeps you fuller longer, reduces jitters and crashes. Plus it offers a slower, more sustained energy high, and kicks the body into the fat-burning drive first thing in the morning. If you are vegan or don’t do dairy, you can substitute the butter for ghee (lactose-free butter with all of the nutrients and none of the dairy)! Either way, make sure your butter is grass-fed, as grain-fed butter and ghee are much lower in nutrients, and, therefore higher in results.

Brain Octane (MCT oil) is a purified form of medium-chain triglycerides that, according to Asprey, keep your brain sharp and your belly slim. MCT oil has 18 times the amount of triglycerides as coconut oil and is in a form that bypasses the liver entirely so that it can be utilized by the brain immediately and efficiently. This means increased cognitive function and energy, a boosted, thriving metabolism, and when consumed on an empty stomach

Here’s how to make it:
1. Brew 1 cup of coffee using fresh coffee beans. The traditional bulletproof coffee recipe recommends using a French press.

2. Add 2 teaspoons of Brain Octane to the coffee when it’s hot.

3. Mix in 1-2 tablespoons grass-fed butter or ghee.

4. Pour into your trusty blender and blend for 30 seconds.

So what are people saying about it? “Taking in a fatty meal in the morning is definitely going to make you fuller quicker,” says Dr. Lisa Ganjhu, D.O., associate professor of medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center in…

…New York City. And because the fat slows down gastric motility (aka filling and, ahem, emptying of the digestive system), you feel fuller for longer, thus eating less throughout your day. The result: fewer calories equalling weight loss.

Ganjhu explained that the way MCT oil is processed by the body could make you feel an energy boost more quickly. It bypasses the usual multi-step digestion process and is transported directly to the liver, where it is converted into energy. So our body’s response to MCT oil is closer (in how we feel its effects) to medication and alcohol than to other foods.

Also, bloggers are getting behind the buttery beverage too. Check out this post on Buzzfeed.
