If You Didn’t Celebrate Women’s History Month, Here’s What You Missed

Table of Contents

As March draws to a close, we may realize there’s a lot that happens and is celebrated during the month of March. It’s a month where we begin to see spring show its head, and we feel tired for a week after losing one precious hour of sleep. It’s a month where we bring out books from our childhoods and read them to our children since March is Reading Month is celebrated in so many schools. There is one more thing we celebrate, that may be the most important of all.

Women’s Month, which began to be celebrated in 1987, is one of the most celebrated “holidays” among women. Not only does it celebrate women and their many accomplishments, but it’s also a time for women to feel uplifted and empowered. Which is so important when so many women feel they lack the level of respect they deserve at their jobs, in their communities, and even in their own homes.

Some may believe that having a month that only celebrates women may not be necessary, since we’re all supposed to be equal anyway. But in many cases, women are still put on the back burner, and having to fight for their rights. Women’s Month has so many reasons it’s important. But here are the top five reasons for sure.

It allows women to be celebrated both from history and the present

Women have made so many contributions to the society we have today. However, so many women have been put on the back and reduced to being someone’s wife, or only getting one or two sentences in our history books. Women such as Corretta Scott-King and Betty Shabazz were mostly known as the other wives of two of the most well-known civil rights leaders in history.

What many may not know is that the two women transcended religious beliefs to hold each other up when their husband’s tragic murders. Both women continued their husbands’ work and began doing civil rights work in their own names. Women’s month gives us the opportunity to research how much these women and many more have truly contributed to history, and how big of an impact that contribution made on our lives today.

It allows women to celebrate each other

When women are able to come together and celebrate each other, positivity can grow. Often times, women may feel as if they are being negatively scrutinized by their peers, causing women to feel self-conscious and isolated from their peers. Celebrities such as Letoya Luckett, Jada Pinkett-Smith, and even Michelle Obama have all discussed and held public discussions on women empowerment and encouraging women to praise each other and reach for their dreams.

Women’s Month allows women to come together and learn how to build bonds with other women, from co-workers to family members. Those bonds can become tighter and allow women to be more comfortable with each other.

It allows women to celebrate who they are and what they can achieve

Women can often be viewed as soft, emotional, and weak, always in need of a male counterpart. While having a man around is wonderful for many reasons, many women already know that they aren’t so “weak” that they can’t do anything without a man. Women’s month allows women to embrace their vulnerability but also their strength, and realize that all of this is what makes them unique. Women have great balance in emotional, spiritual, physical, and mental strength. That should be celebrated for more than one month. But one month is a great beginning.

Women’s month is designed to celebrate women both past and present and allows our future women to learn that they will grow to be powerful. And nothing, not even being a woman, will stop them from achieving every dream they hope to reach.
