Stubborn Quarantine Weight? CoolSculpting May Be the Answer For You

Table of Contents

Have you been struggling to lose those stubborn quarantine pounds? Well, you’re not alone. According to a July 2020 survey conducted by Nutrisystem, 66 percent of respondents shared that they’ve gained up to 16 pounds. during their time in self-isolation. They also reported that it has been significantly more difficult to lose the weight than before the pandemic, and they’re now willing to try non-traditional weight loss methods.

In comes CoolSculpting.

CoolSculpting is the brand name for a fat-freezing method which aims to get rid of stubborn fat in certain parts of your body. The method is called cryolipolysis, which was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2010.

Researchers borrowed the idea from studying what happens to fat when a person becomes frostbitten. Since fat freezes at a higher temperature than skin, the cryolipolysis device cools fat to a temperature that destroys it, while leaving the skin and other tissues unharmed.

So, what is the procedure like?

Unlike liposuction, CoolSculpting is minimally invasive and does not require needles. The device holds the part of your body that your doctor wants to target between two paddles, which cool quickly and are left in place for anywhere from half-hour to 90 minutes. During that time, the process destroys about 20-25 percent of the fat cells in the area that’s targeted. The procedure can be done at your doctor’s office, and you don’t even need to schedule recovery time afterward. It’s permissible to drive yourself home from the appointment.

Along with the convenience, if you’re a good candidate the risks are minimal as well.  An analysis published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal found that, of 1,445 people, only 12—or less than 1 percent—reported any complications at all. The most common complication was having less sensation than beforehand in the treated area.

The final results may not…

immediately show up, but over the course of a few weeks those target areas will appear significantly more toned and leaner. Your immune system clears out the dead fat cells slowly over this time, just the same as they would if weight loss were achieved naturally.

Should you get it?

Despite common misconceptions, cryolipolysis isn’t a way to lose weight. A physician may suggest it, however, if you’ve tried diet and exercise and haven’t been able to get rid of certain fat pockets.

You may want to avoid CoolSculpting if you have:

  • Loose skin
  • Poor skin tone
  • Cryoglobulinemia (a condition wherein abnormal proteins in your blood thicken at cold temperatures)
  • Cold urticaria (a skin condition that causes hives on your skin when it gets colder out)
  • Paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria (a type of anemia that destroys your red blood cells when you’re in cold temperatures)

If this sounds like something you’re considering, just remember that CoolSculpting is but one option for removing fat. Please discuss your options for fat removal with your doctor, as well as the benefits and risks of these procedures, which may vary between individuals.
