Mark S. Johnson, M.D., MPH, dean of the Howard University College of Medicine, is a renowned, caring physician dedicated to serving the underserved and committed to diversity in medical education.
Dr. Johnson views his position at Howard University as an opportunity to promote collaborations with other schools in the university, citing the need for research teams in sociology, psychology, architecture and other disciplines to solve many of the medical issues our country is facing today.
“I want Howard University to be a national resource for the health care solutions needed for our country,” said Dr. Johnson
Dr. Johnson was born in Newark, N.J., and graduated from Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies/Black Literature. He earned his medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and completed his residency at University of South Alabama Medical Center, his first choice school.
“I credit my parents for creating an environment that was intellectually stimulating. There were books all over the house. I was able to listen to adult conversations about politics, civil rights and philosophy. Most importantly, it was clear to me that the only limitations on my life were those that I imposed on myself.”
Dr. Johnson is a past member of the editorial board of the American Family Physician and is a current editorial board member for the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine.
One of his favorite analogies to help inspire others is that life is a marathon, not a sprint. “As such, short term sacrifice should be easy to accept when you consider the magnitude of the rewards of hard work,” says Dr. Johnson.
