What Those Hard To Say Beauty Ingredients Really Mean

Those big scientific words on the back of your beauty products mean nothing to the average person, but you must realize that those ingredients mean a lot when it comes to your health and the results that you are looking for.

Below are some of the more popular terms you may find on your products and what exactly they mean.

Allantoin

Found in the comfrey root, allantoin is a skin-soothing botanical extract.

It is a skin softener and anti-irritant.

It helps to restore the soft and supple feeling of the skin, as well as promote cell regeneration.

Most cosmetics have a synthetic (lab-made) version of allantoin that is just as effective as the natural version.

Retinyl Palmitate

Otherwise referred to as vitamin A, this is a powerful antioxidant that stimulates cellular turnover and slowed collagen breakdown.

It’s an ingredient perfect for anti-aging products that promise to fight off wrinkles.

Ascorbyl Palmitate

Otherwise referred to as vitamin C, this ingredient is a regenerative antioxidant that has skin-brightening effects. It’s best if products with lots of this ingredient in it are used at night!

Tocopherol

Otherwise referred to as vitamin E, this ingredient is one of the most powerful antioxidants out there! It prevents dryness and most signs of aging. It’s also really good for fading scars and stretch marks.

Sodium Hyaluronate

This ingredient can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water, making it a great addition to a moisturizing product. It’s great for reducing the appearance of wrinkles by being an ultra hydrator for the skin.

Camellia Sinensis

Otherwise referred to as Green Tea Extract, this ingredient is a soother and antioxidant. It’s perfect for sunscreens as it reduces sun damage on the skin.

Hamamelis Virginiana Extract

Otherwise referred to as witch hazel extract, this ingredient is a gentle astringent that absorbs excess oil and tightens pores without over-drying the skin.

Dimethicone

This silicone-based polymer is often found in skin primers and hair conditioners. It fills enlarged pores and wrinkles helping your foundation glide smoothly onto the skin giving it an airbrushed effect. It also makes the hair smooth and slick.
