Aromatherapy Can Improve Your Sex Life

The sense of smell is all powerful in being able to shift the emotions and consciousness of living beings. Certain scents can make you hungry or cause you to become nostalgic, thinking of a memory associated with the observed smell. Some scents can cause people to become happy whereas others can create a sense of melancholy in others. No matter what the reaction of the scent, it has been proven that our sense of smell has a direct effect on our emotional state, and sexuality isn’t impervious to these same affects.

There is a plethora of ways to bring about change to your sex life and aromatherapy is one that is often overlooked. Essential oils (the blood of plants and flowers) carry strong scents that have been used for centuries in conjunction with therapeutic baths, massages and even in room fragrances to relieve stress and depression and to usher in a sense of tranquility and peace.  Although Eastern cultures have adopted the practice in holistic healing, Western culture has just begun to explore the many benefits of aroma therapy.

Premature ejaculation, erectile dysfunction, lowered libido and imbalanced hormones are four common sexual dysfunctions that cause division and insecurity within sexual relationships.  By using aromatherapy these issues can be remedied and there are several plants that can be used specifically for each sex.

Whether used in a diffuser, burned in candles, used in massage oils or inhaled directly these following essential oils can be used to help improve sexual function:

For Women

Ylang-Ylang– This essential oil is distilled from the flowers of the ylang-ylang tree and is known to help evoke feelings of romance with couples who may have lost their interest in sex due to work related stress, depression or because of the toxic effects of pollution. This oil has been known to cause nausea and headache in those who may be sensitive when used in a large amount, so the oil should be diffused lightly and used in the recommended doses. This oil blends well in lotions and massage oils.

Rose Oil- Roses have been used for centuries as aphrodisiacs necessary for adding feelings of romance to a sexual situation. This oil is known to boost libido and reduce symptoms of rigidity, sexual dysfunction, erectile dysfunction and general sexual disinterest in a partner. This oil is also known to regulate issues with menses and maintain the health of the uterus.  Hormonal imbalance can be remedied using this oil.  Note: Rose oil should not be used by pregnant women.

For Men

Sandlewood-This oil sedates fear, anxiety and restlessness which are primary mental causes of poor sexual performance in men. This oil also induces relaxation, positive thoughts, concentration and inner vision. When used on the skin sandlewood should be combined with a carrier oil. This is a great essential oil to use during foreplay for men who are known to become nervous during the sex.

Lavender-Anxiety and stress are banished using this oil while replacing them with relaxation and hormonal balance. This oil is known to help blood circulation and is recommended for diabetics as an alternative treatment.

There are several additional essential oils that can bring improvement to sex lives including Neori, cleri sage and jasmine. Instructions on how to use these oils can be found on the official blog site of Dr. Julissa Hernandez, Naturopathic Doctor ND, CNHP
