8 Questions That Prove You’re Doing Better Than You Think

doing better than you think

“Life’s a ____, and then you die.”

It’s a blunt, somewhat cynical expression, but it captures a feeling that most of us have experienced at one time or another. Life can be exhausting, unpredictable, and downright unfair. Some days, it feels like we’re doing everything we can just to keep our heads above water. Between raising a family, paying bills, maintaining relationships, managing responsibilities, and chasing our dreams, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by everything life demands of us.

We all have moments when we wonder whether we’re doing enough. We compare ourselves to people who seem to have it all figured out, dwell on the things we haven’t accomplished, and worry about how far we still have to go. We focus so much on what’s missing from our lives that we forget to appreciate what we already have.

But here’s something you need to hear: You’re probably doing much better than you think you are.

Seriously!

That doesn’t mean your problems aren’t real or that you should pretend everything is fine when it isn’t. Life can be genuinely difficult, and sometimes we face challenges that seem impossible to overcome. But even on the hardest days, there may be reasons to feel hopeful, grateful, and proud of yourself.

Sometimes, we need to take a step back and look at our lives from a different perspective. We need to stop measuring our happiness exclusively by what we’ve achieved and start recognizing the little things that make our lives meaningful.

So, if you’ve been feeling discouraged, overwhelmed, or disappointed with yourself lately, take a moment to answer these eight simple questions. You might discover that you have more going for you than you’ve been giving yourself credit for.

1. Are you reading this article?

If so, you have a valuable tool at your disposal. The power of the internet is limitless. You can learn about anything you desire, connect with old friends, explore job opportunities, search for support communities, and network with people all around the world. Not to mention that your vision is intact, too.

2. Did you eat something today?

One out of eight people in the world are suffering from hunger, so be thankful that you’re not one of them.

3. Do you hate your job?

At least you have one, unlike the 7.1 million Americans who were unemployed and actively looking for work in September 2026. The U.S. unemployment rate was 4.2 percent at that time.

If you have dreams of self-employment (and enough savings to support yourself), I’m sure an unemployed person would be happy to trade places with you so that you can pursue your passion.

4. Did you just scroll down to read this?

I don’t know about you, but I’m glad I have fingers and extremities like hands and fingers to do things with, unlike the hundreds of thousands of Americans who have some type of amputation.

5. Did you fail at something recently?

Failure is the most effective teacher you’ll ever meet, so be happy you learned a lesson. Stop looking at failure as a bad thing and see it as a learning opportunity.

Improve yourself in some way every time you fail, and eventually, you will become so developed that the only option left is success.

6. Are you mad at your family for something they did or said?

Before you answer that question, think about how many family members you have. While you may have lost some, just as many of us, you can still call a few “family.”

That’s not the case for many children who are in shelters because their “family” isn’t around. Cherish your family, even during the bad times. We all make mistakes, especially those closest to us.

7. Could you stand up right now if you wanted to?

Movement should be an expression of joy and thankfulness. You have working limbs and a body that can carry you wherever you want to go in this beautiful world.

The next time you catch yourself putting off exercise, think about all the people in the world who are confined to wheelchairs. Some people don’t move because they can’t, so move because you can.

8. Did you just understand what you just read?

This proves your brain is working properly. You are poised to create, decipher, understand, and overcome. You have all the tools needed to accomplish your goals: your brain.

The Challenge: Make a List of What You’re Grateful For Today

Now that you’ve answered these eight questions, let’s try something that could change how you see your day.

Take a few minutes to write down everything you’re grateful for right now.

Don’t worry about creating a beautiful list or coming up with profound answers. Start with the simple things.

Maybe you’re grateful for a comfortable bed, a warm shower, a favorite cup of coffee, or a few minutes of peace before the day gets busy. Perhaps you’re thankful for a friend who always makes you laugh, a partner who supports you, a child who gives you a reason to smile, or a pet who greets you enthusiastically when you come home.

Maybe you’re grateful for another chance to learn from a mistake, make a difficult decision, or work toward a dream you’ve nearly given up on.

You might even be grateful for something you once considered a setback because it helped you discover what truly matters to you.

Write it all down.

If you’re having trouble getting started, consider these prompts:

  • My relationships: Who makes my life better, and how do they show me they care?
  • My opportunities: What skills, resources, or experiences do I have that help me move forward?
  • My everyday comforts: What small things make my day easier, safer, or more enjoyable?
  • My personal growth: What have I learned recently, even if the lesson was difficult?
  • My future: What is one thing I can look forward to, work toward, or hope to experience?

You may be surprised by how many things come to mind once you start looking for them.
