Is Your Perfume Triggering Your Eczema?

It’s warming up outside, which means more sun and more melanin poppin’. Yet, your eczema just won’t let you be great…sigh.

But wait, don’t slink over to the bland, sensitive skin care aisle just yet! Some sensitive-skin-safe alternatives on Amazon can get you into the summer vibes. Here are some non-eczema-irritating products for the spring and summer seasons.

Why Perfume Can Trigger Eczema

  • Fragrance Allergens:

Many perfumes (including those in lotions, shampoos, and deodorants) contain allergens like limonene, linalool, or citronellol—common irritants for people with eczema or allergic contact dermatitis.
  • Alcohol and Irritants:

Perfumes often include alcohol, which can dry out your skin and disrupt the skin barrier, making it more prone to inflammation.
  • Synthetic vs. Natural:

Both synthetic and natural fragrances can cause reactions. “Natural” doesn’t mean allergy-free. Essential oils, for instance, can be highly sensitizing.

Signs Your Perfume Might Be Causing a Flare-Up

  • Red, itchy patches where perfume is applied (neck, wrists, behind ears).
  • Burning or stinging sensation shortly after application.
  • Eczema is worsening without a clear cause.
  • Repeated flares after wearing certain scented products.

What You Can Do

  • Switch to fragrance-free products. Look for labels that say “fragrance-free” (not just “unscented,” which can still contain masking fragrances).
  • Do a patch test. Test new products on a small area first.
  • Use hypoallergenic brands. Brands like Vanicream, La Roche-Posay, and CeraVe have fragrance-free lines.
  • Protect your skin barrier. Keep skin moisturized with emollients.
  • Consult a dermatologist. If flares persist, a patch test can identify fragrance allergies.

Safe Alternatives

  • Essential oil diffusers for ambient scent (but not on skin).
  • Fragrance-free body oils with natural botanicals.
  • Clothing sprays or scented jewelry instead of applying fragrance to skin.

The brand Juliette has a Gun sports the “Not a Collection”, an assortment of scented products made without the harmful allergens that Eczema sufferers try to avoid.

This product touts a 4 1⁄2 star rating on Amazon, with reviews stating, “So fresh, clean and lasting…” They also boast five-star reviews of over 80 percent on their website, all positives seemingly making it worth the considerable price tag. Nonetheless, smelling great without the skin irritation is money well spent.

3. Sabé Masson Le Soft Perfume.

Amazon offers the scent profile “Striptease Flowers” in the Sabé Masson perfume collection, as a perfume stick rather than a sprayable (and spillable) liquid.

Founded in 2014, Sabé Masson strives to create perfumes without harsh, irritating chemicals. With 74 percent five-star reviews on Amazon, this perfume has generally positive comments, with only a couple of laments of wishing it were in liquid form. Personally, though, who wouldn’t want a perfume you don’t have to worry about spilling all over the place, wasting your hard-earned money (especially in this economy)??

If you’d like to peruse more harsh chemical-free scents from Sabé Masson – those that are in liquid form – there are many on their website. However, the entire website is in French, so you may want to get your Google Translate ready!

4. Mustela Musti – Baby Plant-Based Perfume & Cologne Spray.

Yes – this perfume is for babies as well as adults. No, you will not smell like a baby. This infant and adult-safe perfume is alcohol-free and is 97 percent plant-based, including honey and chamomile extracts as a couple of its ingredients.

As mentioned earlier, while it is used for babies, it can be used by adults looking for a light scent without skin irritation. Five-star reviews of Mustela Musti on Amazon are over 60 percent, with one customer stating that it’s a “perfect scent for everybody.”

Reviews on www.mustelausa.com are nearly as good, with one customer stating that it’s a “calm, sweet smell. My favorite” and another calling it “the perfect scent,” describing Mustela Musti as “smooth and lovely.” A light, airy scent that’s also gentle on the skin – eczema sufferers can rest assured their skin will not only smell amazing but will also be in safe hands.

Maybe perfumes just aren’t for you. Here are two scented lotion brands that are deemed safe for sensitive skin.
