A Dermatologist Explains Alopecia Areata: When Genetics and Stress Trigger Alopecia

Alopecia areata is an autoimmune form of hair loss that disproportionately affects Black and brown populations. It often appears suddenly as coin-shaped patches of complete hair loss, although some people may experience more extensive hair loss across the scalp or body.

Genetics can play a role, and stress may trigger or worsen flare-ups in people who are predisposed to the condition. While new patches can’t always be prevented, treatments are available to help encourage hair regrowth, including steroid injections, topical or oral medications and newer systemic treatments for more extensive hair loss.

Dermatologist Victoria Barbosa explains what to look for, why it’s important to see a dermatologist and the treatment options available for alopecia areata.
