Musician, actor and creator of the popular TV series, “Atlanta,” Donald Glover, aka “Childish Gambino” announced on Friday that he recently discovered an ailment that required surgery. After his New Orleans show on Sept. 7, he sought tests at a hospital and canceled a Houston show the following night. In a note on X, he did not elaborate on his condition.
But as of Tuesday, October 8th, according to news outlet KHOU 11, the singer is still in Houston at an unnamed hospital, recovering from surgery. A spokesperson for Glover could not be reached for comment.
On Oct. 4, Donald shared a post on X (formerly Twitter) addressing the tour’s cancellation. “After my show in New Orleans, I went to the hospital in Houston to make sure of an ailment that had become apparent,” he wrote. “After being assessed, it became clear I would not perform that night, and after more tests, I could not perform the rest of the US tour in the time asked.”
The tour began in Oklahoma City on Aug. 11, before Donald postponed the North American dates due to his “physical health.”
In a Sept. 9 X post, he wrote, “hey everyone. unfortunately i have to postpone the rest of the north American tour to focus on my physical health for a few weeks. hold onto your tickets. ALL tickets will be honored for the upcoming dates in north America when they are rescheduled. thanks for the privacy. thanks for the support. thanks for the love.”
The Mr. and Mrs. Smith actor was scheduled to return on Oct. 31 in France during the European leg of the tour, but his latest update noted that has changed. “As of now, I have surgery scheduled and need time out to heal,” he said. “My path to recovery is something I need to confront seriously. With that said, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the remainder of the North American tour and the UK and European dates.”
He specified that all tickets will be refunded at the point of purchase.
“I want nothing more than to bring this show to the fans and perform,” Donald finished. “Until then, thanks for love, privacy, and support.”
Since Glover had to cancel the remaining tour and go into surgery, the issue must be serious.
He, like other men in their 40s, can experience a number of health issues, including, but not limited to:
Heart disease
Men over 40 are at a higher risk of heart disease due to a number of factors, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and obesity. Regular health screenings can help detect and manage these risks.
Kidney stones
Kidney stones are more common in men, and typically affect people between the ages of 40 and 60.
Colorectal cancer
Men over 40 are at a higher risk of colorectal cancer, and the risk doubles after age 50.
As a father, Glover is more motivated than ever to be healthy. Not just for him, he says, but for the next generation. That’s why he’s always looking for the cleanest products.
“Everybody’s gonna need medicine… And when you’re giving it to your children, you want them to have the best of everything,” he tells us. “When [most people] are giving their kid medicine, they’re already in a situation where they’re stressed and they want to give their kids the best. They just wish they weren’t sick.”
“We have our own garden,” he says in a 2023 interview. “And with all of our food waste, we compost and put back into the garden. I also have an electric vehicle — I was kind of an early adopter of that. We’re also looking into hydro paneling, to take water from the air… stuff like that.”
“I use beeswax a lot,” continues Glover. “That works for for everybody’s hair. Or olive oil for the kids hair…. I use olive oil for everything. I use it for my skin sometimes too, depending on like how much time I’m spending in the sun.”
Glover was born at Edwards Air Force Base in Edwards, California, on September 25, 1983. He grew up in Stone Mountain, Georgia, where his father was stationed. His mother, Beverly (née Smith),[20] is a retired daycare provider and his father, Donald Glover Sr., was a postal worker.[18][21] His parents were foster parents for 14 years. Glover was raised as a Jehovah’s Witness but is no longer religious.[19][22] His younger brother, Stephen, later became a writer and producer who collaborates with him.[23] He has a sister named Brianne. In December 2018, Glover disclosed that his father had died.
Donald Glover attended Avondale High School and DeKalb School of the Arts; he was voted “Most Likely to Write for The Simpsons” in his high school yearbook. In 2006, he graduated from the New York University Tisch School of the Arts with a degree in dramatic writing.[28] While at Tisch, he self-produced the independent mixtape The Younger I Get, which has not been released and has been disowned by Glover for being the “too-raw ramblings” of what he calls a “decrepit Drake”.[29] He began DJing and producing electronic music under the moniker MC DJ (later as mcDJ)[30] remixing Sufjan Stevens’ album Illinois (2005).
The New World Tour was slated to be Glover’s final tour as Childish Gambino, the name he used to break into the music scene. He earned 12 Grammy nominations and won five awards under the performing moniker. In June, Glover revealed he was ready to shed the Childish Gambino name and move on to the next chapter of his career. “It’s not fulfilling. And I just felt like I didn’t need to build in this way anymore,” he told the New York Times.
Besides his award-winning musical career, Glover is a comedian and actor known as the creator of the TV comedy show Atlanta. In 2017 he became the first African American to win an Emmy Award for comedy directing. He also starred in Prime Video’s “Mr. and Mrs. Smith.” In 2006, comedian Tina Fey handpicked Glover to join the writing staff on her NBC hit series 30 Rock at the age of 23. He left 30 Rock after three seasons and joined the cast of NBC’s “Community” as an ex-high school jock.
Glover has appeared in several films, including the supernatural horror The Lazarus Effect (2015), the comedy-drama Magic Mike XXL (2015), and the science fiction film The Martian (2015). He played Aaron Davis in the superhero film Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), as well as Lando Calrissian in the space western Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018).[4] He provided the voice of adult Simba in The Lion King (2019),[5] and produced the short film Guava Island (2019), in which he starred.[6] He co-created the comedy thriller television series Swarm (2023–present). Glover is also credited as a principal inspiration for the creation of the Marvel Comics superhero Miles Morales / Spider-Man, whom Glover himself voiced in the animated series Ultimate Spider-Man.
