Earlier this month, it was announced that former Wild and Out star Ms Jacky Oh! passed away. She died at the age of 32. The sudden news of her death shocked many in pop culture. It was later revealed that the mother of three had died from complications from a “mom makeover” surgery, which is usually a tummy tuck and breast augmentation.

Celebrities mourned her death, including her longtime partner and children’s father, DC Young Fly. At her memorial service, he gave an emotional speech and said, “I love you, Jack. These girls are so beautiful. God gave me the strength to have three.

In today’s culture, many people have turned to plastic surgery to change their bodies and appearance. With the “bounce back” culture that encourages new moms to get back into their pre-pregnancy bodies as soon as possible, there’s been an increase in mommy makeover surgeries.

According to The Aesthetic Surgery Society, the U.S. saw a 54 percent increase in plastic surgery procedures in 2021. While not a new concept, plastic surgery has become normalized over the years, and the dangers of complications are becoming more and more recognized.

With cosmetic surgeries heavily advertised on social media by surgeons themselves, such as the notorious Miami doctor, many have turned to other surgical options, including low-cost alternatives. However, the removal of important protocols only leads to a higher probability of risk.

Conversations around safe plastic surgery options started to make headlines after celebrities like Cardi B shared stories about risky surgeries they had in the past.

The rapper shared that she received illegal butt injections in a Queens, NY, basement. She stated in an interview with GQ that “It was the craziest pain ever… I felt like I was gonna pass out. I felt a little dizzy.”

Anyone should be able to choose if they want to change their appearance, but there are five big red flags you should look out for before booking a procedure.

Five Red Flags To Look Out For

1. Make sure your plastic surgeon is board-certified.

Like any other doctor, you want to make sure your surgeon is licensed and experienced to perform your surgery.

2. An unclean and unsafe environment.

Always make sure that the facility where you perform the procedure meets all standards, including sterilization equipment, accredited staff, and appropriate safety instructions.

3. Offer discounts and coupons.

There should be no financial shortcuts when it comes to a medical procedure, aside from your insurance. If your surgical center brags about other offers or discounts, it’s best to turn your back.

4. Your surgeon is not at your consultation.

Your surgeon should be with you every step of this medical procedure. They should hear all of your concerns and wishes in advance and provide any additional details directly to you.

5. Bad reviews.

Just as you would for a restaurant or a hair salon, you should always check the reviews of a surgical center. This is another layer of protection you can add to ensure that everything listed above is accurate.
