Meeting the parents of your significant other for the first time somehow always seems to fall around a holiday. This means not only are you meeting their parents but quite possibly the entire family.

If you’re feeling like a nervous wreck, here are six tips to making a lasting impression:

Come on time.

Nothing’s worse than waiting on someone you barely even know.

Never come empty-handed.

When you’re meeting the parents of a significant other, more than likely, it’ll be at their home.

Make them feel appreciated for opening their homes to you by bringing them something simple yet significant. It can be an aged rare wine or even a nice corkscrew that can become a family heirloom. Make it thoughtful.

Be helpful.

No matter how smooth you think everything is going, the host can still use a lending hand.

If you see help is needed to take heavy meat out of the freezer, jump up and help!

If you see the trash overflowing, simply ask where the garbage chute is and take it out. Believe it or not, it’s truly the little things that matter the most.

Ask questions.

Most parents can’t get enough of taking a trip down memory lane.

Ask them how long have they lived in their house, when was the first time they met, and what your significant other was like growing up.

Questions like these will break that awkward silence and nervousness.

Be respectful.

This should go without saying but be respectful across the board.

This means open doors, say ‘yes ma’am’, ‘no sir’, look them in the eye, and come humbly.

Truly be yourself.

Last but certainly not least, be yourself and show the best assets of your personality that day.

Relax, enjoy yourself and take in the wonderful personalities you will come across!

Find common ground

Discover shared interests or experiences that can help you connect with your partner’s parents. This can be a great way to establish rapport.

Listen actively

Pay attention to what they are saying, and respond thoughtfully. This shows that you are engaged in the conversation and value their thoughts.

Express appreciation

Thank them for having you over and let them know you enjoyed spending time with them. Gratitude goes a long way in leaving a positive impression.

Follow up

Send a thank-you note or a message expressing your gratitude for the invitation and reiterating that you enjoyed meeting them. This shows that you are thoughtful and considerate.
