Eat & Drink Your Stress Away With Spinach

Stress is something we all suffer from at some point. The issue is, we don’t always know how to manage it. What if I told you that you can eat and drink your stress away? I mean, it may not be an instantaneous, in the blink of an eye result, but there is research that suggests that something as inexpensive and easily accessible as spinach can be the stress cure already sitting in your refrigerator.

Spinach is high in the amino acid tryptophan, which helps elevate your mood and promotes better sleep. It’s also high in magnesium, which helps to relax nerves and muscles. Rest is a huge contributor to relieving stress. Research suggests that when the mind and body is more relaxed you are able to think more clearly and handle situations better. This helps keep the stress away. Try some of these spinach recipes below to keep you and your stress levels in order!

Spinach and Carrot Smoothie

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups filtered water or coconut water
  • 1 cup pineapple
  • 1 cup spinach
  • 1 cup carrots (usually 4 small carrots or 2 large carrots)
  • 1 cup ice

Instructions

  1. Place all ingredients into the blender in the order listed and secure lid.
  2. Blend for 1 to 1.5 minutes or until smooth.
  3. Serve immediately.

Italian Herb Spinach Chips 

Ingredients

  • 2 cups fresh spinach (choose the big, healthy-looking leaves)
  • Few drop of extra virgin olive oil
  • McCormicks Italian Blend Seasoning
  • Salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
  2. Place spinach in a large bowl.
  3. Add a few drops of olive oil and mix with your hands until…… each leaf is lightly coated in oil. Don’t get them soggy.
  4. Sprinkle the spinach with Italian herb seasoning and salt.
  5. Taste one of the leaves to make sure you are using enough seasoning (you won’t need a lot of seasoning).
  6. Arrange the spinach in a single layer (no overlapping) on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or lightly oiled nonstick foil.
  7. Watch carefully and let bake for 8-10 minutes.
  8. Let sit on the baking sheet for about 2-3 minutes.
  9. Remove from baking sheet and enjoy.

Cheesy Spinach Crescent Rolls

Ingredients

  • 2 cans of Pillsbury crescent rolls (8 ct. each)
  • 4 oz. crumbled feta cheese
  • 4 oz. shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 3 oz. fresh baby spinach, chopped
  • 1 egg white, beaten
  • 1/4 tsp. red pepper flakes
  • dash of salt and pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together chopped spinach, cheeses, red pepper flakes, salt and pepper. Set aside.
  3. Unroll crescent dough and divide into triangles.
  4. Using a spoon or your hands, place tiny heaps of spinach mixture onto the wide part of the dough triangle.
  5. Carefully roll up the crescents.
  6. Place on a greased cookie sheet and brush the tops with egg white.
  7. Bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown.
