What is important about food labels?

Featured on BlackDoctor

TFal: Labels allow you to make a connection between what you put into your body and the health outcomes, physical health, mental health, overall health. So we’re going to have you connect food as medicine and what matters.

Chi: Also tweaking what goes in your body because your guts, that’s your mouth and then your colon, right? So everything you put in your mouth has something to do with the way you feel your mood, the way you act, and all that.

What are some reasons people go in and out of the hospital?

TFal: So some of the things that are like high blood pressure or heart failure, one of the common reasons people come back in and out of the hospital with their heart failure, is not being under control. They are saying things like, oh, I don’t eat a lot. Oh, I have a can of soup, but they get so much salt in that soup. And they don’t know, they hadn’t understood the impact of reading those food labels. Or somebody comes in with diabetes, their blood sugar keeps food rising, but they are eating a lot of simple sugars that are making that diabetes. So actually this can lead to hospitalization and having people understand that you can make those choices and understand those food labels is really important.

One of the things is, you know, food labels are complicated. We’ll break it down. But you know what? The easiest way not to have to do is eating things that do not have clothes/labels. Labels on the food are like clothes. There are no labels on the veggies. Half of your plate should be vegetables, that’s less things you have to understand, right? So it’s important to know that those things matter. And they’re all connected to what we put into our body. Half of your plate should be vegetables, that’s less things you have to understand, right? So it’s important to know that those things matter. And they’re all connected to what we put into our body.

Chi: Have you ever seen a banana with a food label. Or, apple, or kale, none of those things, none of them, have labels. When you’re eating the kale or spinach, right? You’d never have to worry about how much of it you eat. You can eat a whole bag of kale. If you want. It’s never going to hurt you. You can eat the whole bag of spinach. It’s never going to hurt you.

What is meant by eating 2000 calories a day?

Chi: 2000. That’s just a guide. The FDA guides the food and drug administration. It’s just a guide. So you have to think about your body mass index, your height, your weight, your gender. And if you’re dealing with any health issues as well, which you must talk to your primary care physician about. So that’s just a guide. If you’re trying to lose weight, if you’re trying to gain weight, you may adjust those 2000 calories, right? So it is just a guide. It’s not a hard, fast fact. So we don’t think you must eat 2000 calories a day.

TFal: Absolutely. Because what matters is also in addition to that, how physically active you are. If you’re physically those, all those things impact what that means to take in 2000 calories.
