May is Get Caught Reading month, but when it comes to literacy, rates among African-American children are quite alarming. Fifty-three percent of Black fourth graders scored below the basic reading level on the NAEP reading test, according to the literary nonprofit Reading Is Fundamental. We were all kids once so we can probably agree that along with patience and consistency, the reading material must be fun and interesting for kids to want to pick up a book in the first place, right?
