On average, 37 children die from heat-related deaths after being trapped inside vehicles. Even some of the best parents or caregivers can unknowingly leave a sleeping baby in a car; and the end result can be injury or even death. During the summer, the temperature in a car can rise by 20 degrees in less than 10 minutes even with the windows slightly cracked.
So one young man in Texas invented a device to put a stop to all heat-related car deaths and injury.
Ten-year-old Bishop Curry V says he was inspired to create a device he calls “Oasis” after a baby died in a hot minivan last summer outside a home in Melissa.
The death was near the Curry family’s home in McKinney, Texas. The tragedy especially hit close to home for Curry because he has a 1-year-old sister.
According to NBC-4, Curry V’s device is currently in the design phase. It would attach to a car seat, detect if a child is left inside the vehicle and then blow cool air until parents and authorities are notified.
This is just one of Curry V’s 13 inventions he has so far. Many of his inventions were created to help others ease the life of others.
“My dream is to have many inventions that save lives,” says Curry V.
The Currys recently traveled to Michigan to introduce the idea at an auto safety conference. Curry’s father, Bishop Curry IV is an engineer for Toyoto in Plano, TX.
Last year, Curry V had the opportunity to attend the Center for Child Injury Prevention Conference where he presented his car seat idea to car seat manufactures.
“It’s really important to me because I didn’t think a kid my age would be able to go this far,” he said.
Curry’s father has an intellectual patent on the idea and said he’s spoken with lawyers about the next step.
“Twenty thousand dollars will get us a formal patent and then it will also take us into the prototype production,” he said.
Currently, Curry Jr. and his father have created a clay prototype and drawings of his idea.
The family is also raising money on a GoFundMe page to cover costs to develop a product.
