293 Pound Weight Loss: “God Created Me To Be Healthy & Happy”

It’s hard to change people. Some may even say it’s down right impossible to change a person. So when we are sent stories from fans about their weight loss, we applaud them because they have taken the step to not only change their appearance, but change their future.

Martin Austin is the same way. We received emails not only about this young man’s incredible nearly 300 pound weight loss, but his beautiful attitude and honesty in wanting to help others do the same.  He’s so giving on social media, sharing his diet, his workout and his past to inspire others as he was inspired. According to TheHow.com, his weight loss all started with a decision.

“I was tired of being sick and tired of not being my best self,” admitted Austin to TheHow.com. “Over a two-year period, I quit a job that I loved because I was no longer able to physically keep up with the demands of it. In order to make my life meaningful I needed to make a number of major changes – and weight was one.”

“The moment of realization came to me when I was watching a motivational video of Denzel Washington where he said,

‘Dreams without goals remain just dreams. And they ultimately fuel disappointment.
Goals on the road to achievement cannot be achieved without discipline and consistency.'”

“I admitted to myself then and there that I’d never made a full-hearted attempt at getting healthy and knew I owed it to myself to try. Being scared of failure was no longer an excuse; it was time to set a goal and put together a plan to achieve it.”

“I remember saving weight loss before and after pictures of people who had gone through their transformation in my phone to continue to build my faith and to encourage me to keep going along the way. Now I pray that people can do the same with my before and after pictures and find faith and encouragement especially on rough days or when they want to give up!”

Diet/Meal Plan

“I generally center my meals around a lean protein and a lot of veggies or some fruits. While I am not always adventurous with my eating, I do like to try different fruit and veggie smoothies. I still enjoy a cheat meal (or a cheat day) sometimes, but when I overindulge I don’t beat myself up, I just immediately get back on track. Here are some examples of meals I like to make:

Breakfast: 6 egg whites, whole grain english muffin with raisins and cinnamon topped with honey

Lunch: 3 grilled chicken wings, salad

Lunch or Dinner: Lean piece of steak, green beans, sweet potato

Snacks: Greek yogurt, apple

Dinner: Baked fish, broccoli.”

Fitness Routine

“I joined the gym in October of 2014. I started with 5 to 10 minutes on the treadmill at very slow speeds 3 days a week. As I continued to go to the gym I listened to my body, and when I felt that it was time to make small increases I did. Now I run or walk on the treadmill for up to 70 minutes, plus incorporate weights and the full body circuit into my routine.”

How To Do It/You Can Do It

1.) Start by believing it’s possible.

If you cannot see it being possible, then do like I did: Every week I read three to four articles of people who have…

…successfully lost weight. The stories featured on Lose It! were helpful for this.

2. )Break up the process into small, attainable goals.

I broke my weight loss into 50lb increments. Every time I lost 50lbs, I would create a new vision board and hang it up in my house to remind myself of the goal, the actions that it would take to reach the goal, and the benefits that the goal would bring to my life.

“Losing weight requires sacrifice! Actually making any significant change in life will require sacrifices! (life long, yearly, daily, minute by minute and sometimes second by second) Sacrifice by its very nature is challenging, uncomfortable at times even inconvenient! So to think I or anyone who has lost weight (no matter what method they used) can give a tip or trick that will make the journey easy just isn’t possible! This process requires sacrifice and struggle because it is the grit and the persistence that you learn in the struggle that will solidify your resolve never to go back!!!”

“Two and a half years ago, I could not stand for five minutes, walk 50 feet or sustain energy throughout the day. Good is faithful! It’s not about me and definitely nothing special about me. It continues to be about His glory!”
