BlackDoctor.org Top Blacks In Healthcare 2014: Dr. Clyde W. Yancy

Clyde W. Yancy, M.D., is the chief of cardiology at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Magerstadt professor at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He also serves as associate director of the Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.  Dr. Yancy is internationally celebrated as a star in clinical medicine and heart transplants, and as an outstanding medical scholar.

Coming to Northwestern is, in Dr. Yancy’s words, “a pinnacle along an incredibly rewarding and fulfilling medical career.”

Born and raised in Scotlandville, LA, just outside of Baton Rouge, Dr. Yancy earned his medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine and completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, TX. He also completed a fellowship in cardiology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, where he directed the heart-transplant program and led the institution’s heart-failure program.

Dr. Yancy joined Northwestern in 2011 from the Baylor Heart and Vascular Institute, where he was medical director and chief of cardiothoracic transplantation at Baylor University Medical Center. He is also a past president of the American Heart Association.

His academic and professional interests include hypertension, heart failure and heart transplantation, and ethnic and racial disparities in cardiovascular disease.

Dr. Yancy has authored or co-authored more than 300 contributions in medical literature and has received numerous industry honors, including the “Cardiologists-In-Training” hero award from the national Association of Black Cardiologists, Inc, 2006, AHA’s national “Physician of the Year” and recognition as one of the 15 Top African American Medical Educators in the U.S. by Black Health Magazine.
