Urine: The Secret To Clear Skin?

urine in container

There are many great lengths that people will go to for zit-free skin, but is dousing your face with urine one of them? Not quite.

Although urine is made up of 95% water, the actual component of urea in urine is where all the magical skin benefits come from. Urea is an ingredient found in several skin care products because it’s a natural moisturizer and exfoliant.

According to Naked Chemist, a New Zealand-based beauty company, urea (also known as carbamide) is waste the body produces after it metabolizes protein and the urea used by the cosmetics industry is from “synthetic sources”  – meaning not animals or people.

BeautyRx founder and dermatologist Dr. Neal Schultz says, “Urea is a keratolytic, meaning it dissolves the keratin in the outer layers of the skin. The urea is also a humectant, because it binds and holds water, thereby adding water to the skin.” So, this is why everyone wants to find out about the urine facial and using urine for eczema, psorisis and other skin issues. Urea not only exfoliates dry skin, it helps retain the moisture keeping your skin hydrated.

But before you “go” to DIY, Dr. Schultz advises, “urine contains such a minuscule proportion of urea that you’re barely going to get any results.”

There is still hope though, but you’ll have to ditch the idea of an all natural urine facial and opt for a bit more expensive option. There are creams on the market that carry about 10-15 percent concentrated urea, which is a huge difference from natural urine’s urea valuation of less than 5%.

I guess if your skin is screaming out for help, desperate times may call for desperate measures. But you’re better off running off to the drug store versus the bathroom.
