What Are Those Bumps Under Your Eyes?

women looking up

Ever notice white dots on your face, particularly in the eye region? This is possibly a very common skin disorder called milia. These white bumps are small, benign keratin-filled cysts. They look like white heads, but the only problem is you can’t pop them.

Where Do They Come From?

Featured on BlackDoctor

There are two types of this disorder: primary milia and secondary milia. Unlike many skin disorders, milia isn’t genetic at all. Primary milia forms when you have a high concentration of sweat glands that get keratin trapped under the skin. Secondary milia happens as a result of an injury that blocks the skin ducts. The skin around the eyes is very sensitive and can be easily damaged from friction and/or sunburn.

What Are Treatment Options?

Though these white dots are harmless, they aren’t the most flattering, and if you’ve been dealing with them for a while trying to get rid of them can be very frustrating. These bumps need to be treated as cysts not pimples, and therefore, home draining should be the last option. For permanent removal there are laser resurfacing treatments, but they can be rather costly. Other options, that work rather well but aren’t necessarily permanent, are to go the doctor to have them drained.

Prevention?

Try incorporating chemical peels and exfoliators into your regular routine. This will help keep the skin smooth and not create pockets and places that keratin and other dirt can become trapped.
