Tracee Ellis Ross: A Natural On & Off Screen

After years of acting in such great roles on shows like “Girlfriends” and “Reed Between The Lines,” actress Tracee Ellis Ross won best actress in a television series, musical or comedy for her role in “black-ish,” at the 2017 Golden Globe Awards. This win makes her the first black woman to win the award since Debbie Allen won for the Fame TV show in 1982.

In her acceptance speech, she had standard thank-you’s for her family and co-stars, but first directed her attention more broadly.

“This is for all of the women, women of color and colorful people, whose stories, ideas, thoughts are not always considered worthy, and valid and important,” Ms. Ross said. “But I want you to know that I see you. We see you.”

She continued: “It is an honor to be on this show, ‘black-ish,’ to continue expanding the way we are seen and known, and to show the magic and the beauty and the sameness of a story, and stories that are outside of where the industry usually looks.”

With seemingly every role, Tracee brings a “down-to-earth” feel that makes audiences love, hate, respect and relate to her. But she does it in a way that’s easy and comes natural to her.

Tracee is a natural off screen as well. She often boasts that her routine is so simple that she can do it herself. She says she loves her role on “Black-ish,” as it captures this side of her perfectly. “My character is a mother of four, and a doctor, and a wife, who would not have time to be putting on eyeshadow or curling her lashes. When I’m in bed, I do not have mascara on—that’s a pet peeve of mine in television, when people wake up in bed and have glossy lips. It’s confusing to me.”

I love this about Tracee  – she is so down to earth and real! I think we all kind of question the necessity of the actresses waking up looking like they just came off of a Victoria’s Secret runway. It’s not reality!

Makiage, more specifically their blush, was apparently the first brand of makeup that Tracee’s mother allowed her to play in. And still to this day Tracee loves a bit of blush on her face, and specifically loves Fleur Power from Mac. Here is a rundown on here other faves:

Foundation: Bobbi Brown – Long-Wear Even Finish in Warm Walnut #7.5 in the summer and the rest of the year Golden #6

Mascara: Benefit – They’re Real (this is my personal favorite as well as it really elongates your…

… lashes and still keeps them looking….well….real)

Lipstick:  Tracee explains that she like’s matte lipstick and even jokes about not wearing lip gloss because she can’t talk properly with it. A red lip is her go to. Her faves are Mac -Ruby Woo and Nars – Calliope.

Tracee is big on keeping her skin cleansed and is all about removing her makeup every day! “I use Shiseido Facial Cotton, the little squares. They don’t have any edges on them so nothing hurts the skin around my eyes. I use two with Bioderma Créaline to take my mascara off and I usually hold it on my eyes until the makeup dissolves, and then I really rub to get it all the way off. Then I use two other cotton squares to take off all of the makeup and I wash with a product called Benefit Clean Gentle Cleanser by Cosmedix. I use a Clarisonic, night and morning, and I use the gentle brush on it.” Facials are also a big part of her regular routine. She says she gets facials twice a month.

Brows: So what about her eyebrows? “I don’t know how to do anything to my brows—I just get them waxed. It is the hardest makeup thing, in my opinion.” I would have to agree with her on that. Your eyebrows can really make or break your look, and it is so easy to mess them up! It’s no wonder that she really doesn’t try to bother with them!

Scent: She loves natural perfumes and deodorants. All of her lotions and potions come from Whole Foods where she can guarantee they will be paraben-free and natural.

Her best tip, though, is getting enough sleep. “I do a true eight hours. I try to go to bed before midnight. When I’m working I often have to get up at 4 AM, which makes it really hard to get my eight hours, and it starts to dwindle, and I start to see it in my skin.”
