Instead of the signature tagline, “I’m on a horse” made famous by the deodorant, Old Spice, the popular company may be saying that they are now in a courtroom. The cause? A class-action lawsuit.

The suit comes from Virginia customer Rodney Colley, who claims he’s suffered rashes and burns after using Old Spice deodorant.

Rodney Colley displays injuries he says he suffered from using Old Spice deodorant, according to a class-action lawsuit.

The class-action lawsuit names 13 Old Spice products as potentially defective and dangerous, stating that hundreds if not thousands of men suffered severe rashes and painful chemical burns.

The suit seeks at least $25,000 in damages per victim.

Procter & Gamble released the following statement, emphasizing that the company’s products are safe.

“The safety of the men who use Old Spice is the foundation of everything we do. We go to great lengths to ensure our products are safe to use, and tens of millions of men use this product with confidence and without incident every year. A small number of men may experience irritation due to alcohol sensitivity, a common ingredient used across virtually all deodorant products. For men who have experienced a reaction to a deodorant, an antiperspirant may be a better option because they have a different formulation. If anyone using Old Spice has questions, we encourage them to call us at 1-800-677-7582.”

Antiperspirants and deodorants are generally very safe products. However, these products have received much attention as the possible cause of increasing rates of breast cancer, with most hypotheses indicating the estrogenic properties of parabens as the main contributing factor.

Numerous studies supporting2 and discrediting3 this claim have been published, but recently the FDA and the National Cancer Institute have stated that antiperspirants and deodorants are not linked to cancer. In addition to these concerns, aluminum exposure from deodorant use has been blamed for the rising incidence of Alzheimer’s Disease.

According to court documents, some of the deodorant products named include Swagger Classic Fresh and Pure Sport High Endurance brand — as potentially “defective” and dangerous products.

Court documents also include comments from angry consumers who posted images online.

“My son has been using Old Spice Swagger Deodorant and has a rash in his armpit that is red and burning,” wrote one social media user.

“Shame on you Procter and Gamble for continuing to produce this product with all these reviews, and without warning!!!”
