A Dermatologist Explains: Central Centrifugal Cicatricial Alopecia

Central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia (CCCA) is a type of scarring hair loss that disproportionately affects Black women. It typically starts at the crown of the scalp and gradually spreads outward, causing inflammation and damage to the hair follicles. Symptoms may include thinning or breakage, as well as itching, burning or scalp tenderness.

Unlike some forms of hair loss, CCCA can lead to permanent hair loss if the follicles become scarred. However, early diagnosis and treatment can help slow or stop further damage and, in some cases, encourage hair regrowth.

The sooner you address changes to your scalp or hair, the better. Dermatologist Victoria Barbosa explains how CCCA is diagnosed and the treatments that may help reduce inflammation, protect remaining hair follicles and encourage regrowth.
