The Best Apple For Weight Loss Is…?

granny green apple

An apple a day keeps the doctor away, right? Well what if I told you recent studies may show that an apple a day could keep the pounds away? Washington State University researchers, may have found a tasty revelation about the everyday fruit, and thankfully its apple picking season, you may want to run out and grab a bag, just make sure its the right kind!

The Washington State University research study took a variety of common apples (Braeburn, Fuji, Gala, Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, McIntosh, and Red Delicious), and sought out to find which ones were the healthiest, and which ones brought on the best health benefits. Granny Smiths were the winners! They were found to help fight against many health issues such as obesity, diabetes and promotion of weight loss.

In the study, researchers measured different components to see which type of apple contained the most bioactive compounds, non-digestible parts that reach the colon intact and promote the growth of healthy bacteria. While all apples had some of this good stuff, Granny Smith apples contained the most.

In addition to this, the researchers compared the kinds of bacteria in droppings of obese vs. lean mice before and after feeding them the special apple compounds (sounds gross, but stool contains evidence of stomach bacteria). Researchers found that obese and lean mice have different kinds of bacteria in their stool, but once the apple compounds were introduced into their diet, their stool began to resemble each other.

Previous studies have shown that obese individuals harbor certain types of bacteria in their stomachs that absorb more calories, making them prone to additional weight gain. With the Washington State University study, it is thought that Granny Smiths could help to facilitate weight loss by balancing out the “good” and “bad” bacteria.

So I know that you are probably thinking you should run out and buy all the Granny Smith apples you can find and binge on an apple diet “cleanse”. Well don’t! Keep it simple. Yes, start bringing more apples into your diet, but don’t over do it. Remember too much of anything (except laughter of course), can be bad for you!
