Are You Using Proper Gym Etiquette? 8 Rules To Follow

Have you ever found yourself working out at the gym while the person next to you continues a loud conversation on their cell phone? How about waiting to use a piece of equipment but instead the person “using” it is actually resting, scrolling through their phone, or reading a newspaper?

Yes, this can be quite annoying. There is such a thing as proper gym etiquette and trust me, it goes a long way. It shows respect and consideration for your fellow gym members.

Here Are Some Guidelines For Proper Gym Etiquette:

1. Be respectful and courteous to others.

Try to refrain from using profanity. It’s also okay to smile and speak to your fellow gym-goers.

2. Clean up after yourself.

When you’re finished with the equipment, wipe it down and re-rack it, or place it at its “home”. It’s disrespectful to the next person to leave a machine loaded with multiple plates, expecting them to remove and re-rack them.

3. If Using Cardio Equipment, Please Wipe It Off.

This is especially important if you sweat. It’s important for sanitary reasons. I was totally grossed out by someone on a piece of cardio equipment recently. They worked up quite a sweat and never bothered to at least take a towel and wipe off the machinery. Keep in mind, by not wiping the equipment after yourself, you risk spreading infectious diseases to others.

4. Share The Equipment.

If you are resting between sets and someone wants to use the same piece of equipment, ask them if they would like to work in with you. It’s a great way for both people to get their workout in at the same time and you can possibly make a friend.

5. Try Not To Infringe On Someone’s Space.

Give each other room. If someone is doing a bench press and you want to do the same thing don’t use the bench directly next to them if there is an empty one further away.

6. Offer A Spot.

If you see someone struggling to lift and you’re confident you can help, offer a spot. This will help keep a safe environment.

7. Turn Your Cell Phone Off Or Leave It In Your Locker.

Your conversations should be kept private, away from the gym floor.  Be mindful that you shouldn’t be using your cell phone in locker rooms as that can make other gym-goers feel uneasy in a space meant for privacy.

8. Don’t Hover Around Someone Waiting For Equipment.

If someone is using a piece of equipment that you need or would like, try to find another alternative. Do another exercise instead. Here’s your chance to get creative.

If you’re taking a group fitness class, a lot of the same rules apply. Be courteous, don’t crowd someone’s space. Don’t take up room with your personal belongings (bag, phone, coat, etc.). Wipe down the equipment (weights, mat, etc.), especially if you’ve worked up a sweat. Silence your phone as it is distracting to your fellow classmates and the instructor.

Practicing good gym etiquette will enhance everyone’s experience while at the gym. At the end of the day, that’s what it’s all about.
