Bill Bellamy: Still Funny 25 Years Later

“It’s all about getting that sexy look,”  comedian Bill Bellamy shares as he workouts.  The actor, comedian and producer who gained fame for helping to coin the phrase “Booty Call.” Described as a late-night call to a potential mate with the intention of meeting up strictly for sex, the phrase caught fire and was used everywhere in the early 90’s.

For many years, Bellamy was a staple on MTV, a VJ and the host of several MTV programs including MTV Jamz and MTV Beach House. He went on to star in a number of movies, including Fled, Love Jones, The Brothers, How to Be a Player, Getting Played and Any Given Sunday. He also appeared on two episodes of the TV show Kenan and Kel. Additionally, he voiced Skeeter on the Nickelodeon television show Cousin Skeeter.

“I think it go serious in college when I found out I really enjoyed making people laugh,” admits Bellamy. “It makes me happy. I said, I wanna be a comedian, I wanna get good.’ You’re not good in the beginning. You’re still trying to figure out what the things are that you are going to talk about, what your angle is going to be and there’s a lot of trial and error. I just never gave up and that was the beginning of my career. Just experimenting, trying it out and falling in love with it.

Fast forward to now, Bill is married with kids and admits that he can’t always say the things he wants to say–especially around his kids, since they mimic everything.

“I’m blessed to have a son and a daughter, Bellamy shares. “I like to call them AM and FM. With a boy and a girl, they are wired so differently; two different complete styles of people.”

Bellamy notes that his daughter, Bailey, is emotional, sensitive, talented and delightfully energetic, but delicate. Bellamy lovingly says, “She’s very delicate, so you have to talk to her in a certain way and encourage her in a certain way.”

When it comes to his son, Baron, Bellamy also describes him as sensitive, but with a different energy about him.

Bellamy shares, “Becoming a dad was the best thing that ever happened to me in my life. It gave me a sense of responsibility, love and accomplishment. Good or bad, they mimic everything you do. It’s been an amazing journey learning these two little new human children.”

Bill has kept his signature slim look for years and at the age of 40+, it seems as though Bill has the formula for staying fit and having fun while doing it.

Core Strengthening Exercises
“I like to do core strength exercises, not heavy weights,” explains Bill.  “I’m not trying to be a bodybuilder.  I just want to be a fit person.” Here’s a few examples:

“Suck-In-That-Gut” Crunch
Begin with left knee and left hand on the floor, right arm straight up. Extend right leg so your body forms a straight line. Pull right knee toward torso and right elbow toward knee. Straighten arm and leg. Repeat 10 times, then switch sides.

Crazy Cardio
“I use basketball first to get my heart rate up,” says Bellamy. Using your own body weight as resistance, there’s a number of cardio exercises you can do, such as:
Alternating knee lift
Standing tall, bring one knee toward your chest without collapsing rib cage; twist opposite elbow toward knee. Alternate sides.

Side-to-side leap
Place any long, thin object (such as a broom) on floor. Leap sideways over object, landing with feet together.

Booty Call Squats
The term that first made Bill famous is also the inspiration behind these butt-blasting workouts to shape, lift and firm the buttocks:

Dumbell Deadlift Squat
Set a pair of dumbbells on the floor in front of you. Bend at your hips and knees, and grab the dumbbells with an overhand grip. Without allowing your lower back to round, stand up with the dumbbells. Then try exercise while lowering the dumbbells to the floor.

It’s said the keys to good health are sweating and laughing every day and Bill Bellamy is certainly proving this sage advice works.
