Why Is There A Battle Over Healthy School Lunches?

Not everyone is on board with the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act that was introduced in 2010 and is heavily championed by First Lady Michelle Obama.

“Republicans in Congress are attempting to block new school lunch standards that will take affect this coming school year,” said Roland Martin during today’s News One  Now broadcast addressing the hot topic.

Current statistics estimate that 1 in 3 children in the U.S. is overweight or obese, and likewise, that means 1 in 3 children are on track to develop diabetes in their lifetime (and likely at an earlier onset age).

According to a 2012 study by the CDC published in the journal Diabetes Care, the number of teen diabetics will increase by nearly 50 percent by the year 2050.

Opponents of the food program would like to give certain schools the option to opt out of the program for the upcoming year, but is that a wise idea given our national health crisis?  Check out the video and consider where you stand on the issue.
