Cicely Tyson: A Legacy Of Learning

At 95-years-old, award-winning actress and activist Cicely Tyson has done and almost seen it all. She has acted in films with some of the greatest, won numerous awards and accolades and has been a cover girl in her modeling days. And, she added being a covergirl to her list, an Elle magazine covergirl to be exact. US ELLE just tapped Tyson to cover it’s annual ‘Women In Hollywood‘ issue for November 2017.

At that’s not all! The three-time Emmy winner Tyson could won critical acclaim again for her guest role as Ophelia Harkness, the mother of Viola Davis‘ Annalise Keating, on “How to Get Away with Murder.” She was previously nominated for the ABC legal thriller’s debut season in 2015. Tyson won two Emmys for “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman” (1974) and another for “Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All” (1994), received a Kennedy Center honor, and an honorary Oscar Award in 2018.

The model and actress also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016. It is the highest honor any American civilian can receive.

All these accolades come down to one constant in Tyson’s life: Learning from the best.

“At the very beginning of my career, I had a teacher whose name was Vinnette Carroll,” explains Tyson. “She directed a number of Broadway shows. She kept saying to me, ‘You know the problem with beautiful women? They tend to rely on their beauty.’ And I said, How wrong she is! I never think of myself as being beautiful. I thought, What are you talking about? I work so hard. And I did. But I learned from her how important it is to learn your craft. When all else fails, you will land on that, and that alone.”

Congratulations Ms. Tyson! Here are some other beautiful pictures of the cover girl below:
