"Cousin Jeff” Johnson Talks About Dyslexia Detection In Children

Jeff Johnson

Dyslexia, a developmental reading disorder, causes difficulties with spelling, reading, writing, and finding the proper words when speaking. A child might be unable to read the word volcano, or might say the similar-sounding “tornado” when presented with a picture, even though he or she knows what a volcano is.

Nevertheless, people with dyslexia may have other language-related deficits such as problems understanding rapid speech, difficulty in following complex or multi-part instructions, or trouble remembering things in correct sequence. Because of the difficulty in processing letter sounds, people with dyslexia are often poor spellers.

Reports say that In the United States, more than 10 million children live with the disorder. Dyslexia is also one of the most common learning disabilities and it affects one in five children.

Unfortunately, many dyslexics aren’t diagnosed until high school, college, or even middle age. Some never receive an explanation for their struggles with reading.

Johnson, also know as Cousin Jeff from his B.E.T. – Rap City Video days and now an MSNBC reporter, called into The Madd Hatta Morning Show and spoke about what he and his son, Miles, went through before detection.
