Faith Evans: Learning, Living and Leaving a Legacy

Songbird Faith Evans made a name for herself in the early 1990s with her debut album and being the wife of late hip-hop star Notorious B.I.G. Fast forward over 25 years and the beautiful singer has had chart-topping hits, college-aged children and a life she can smile about.

Faith’s been in the news lately with her now-husband, music producer and TV-star Stevie J. According to multiple outlets, Faith was arrested in late May 2020 at around 1 AM after cops got called to their L.A.-area home. TMZ.com shared that Faith and Stevie got into a heated argument, and at some point, it turned violent.

Sources say when cops showed up they noticed visible marks and scratches on Stevie’s face. It’s unclear what triggered the argument. Cops proceeded to arrest Faith and booked her for felony domestic violence. Faith bonded out later that day.

The arrest comes nearly a year after the couple downplayed rumors their marriage was in trouble.

But her husband and her new music aren’t the only thing Faith has been up to. She even has a 60-pound weight loss that she is proud of.  In her own words, Faith describes how it all happened:

“When I moved to Atlanta, I had a trainer down there for a couple of years. Actually, I started working with her prior to my last album. Since that time, I relocated and got even more into fitness and dropped a few more pounds. I guess the more weight I lost, the easier it was to see my physique. I’ve been at it for a couple of years. It wasn’t easy.”

“My highest weight was 192 lbs. I’m 5’7″and at about 132 lbs now. I met this trainer, and her approach worked for me. I do these stairs in Santa Monica—it’s about 200 stairs, and I go up and down them 15 times. I do the stairs about four times a week, and my kids, they do the stairs too. Traveling makes it hard, but when I’m on the road, I take weights and resistance bands. I tie the bands onto doorknobs and do arm exercises. I might occasionally have a cookie, but working out is the key for me. I never saw myself doing push-ups, but now I’ll do 50 by the side of the stage. It feels good to know I can do it.”

“I’m more fit than I’ve ever been in my adult life. Losing weight and being fit are totally two different things. I’m actually working on a motivational fitness DVD. That’ll be out soon. It will cover everything: how I eat, going to get veggie juice before I work out.”

She adds, “I want to show people how I maintain it. Of course I haven’t been documenting the whole three years since I embarked on trying to get to the weight I’m at now.”

Faith’s personal trainer, Angie Denkins, says there there are three key points that helped faith accomplish her goal. She calls it the “faith based workout”:

Hide The Scale: Use the scale as a guide once every several months. With Faith, we mainly went by how she felt and how she looked in her clothes. Muscle weighs more than fat. Some folks may appear to be 110 pounds, but because they are muscular in build they may weigh 125 or 130.

Set Your Pace: Faith’s in the shape of an elite athlete, so she’s at a level way above the rest. But anyone can start by…


…working out two to three times a week doing some type of exercise, even if it’s just walking or following a fitness tape at home. And if your schedule allows it, gradually add a day to your regimen. You’ll see that as you become more consistent, the results will be very rewarding.

Partner Up: When Faith lived in Atlanta, we worked out four or five days a week, sometimes twice a day. Prior to , she did her own cardio workout on the treadmill, bike or StairMaster. Then we worked out together for an hour or hour and a half on weight training â fairly low weights, but at least 30 reps per set and at least three sets of each exercise and core-strength training with gymnastics and Pilates. For example, I had her holding positions without putting her hands or feet on the floor.

“One of the biggest performances…I ended up performing for an hour and 15 minutes. My energy was going. I totally noticed a difference. I’m dancing more, doing moves I wouldn’t normally do, squatting down on the stage, and I’m sure the newfound athleticism has something to do with it.”
