Hair Burning: The New Remedy For Split Ends

split ends

Split ends are the worst when it comes to beautiful straight hair! And if you are a curly-headed girl, though you may hide them better, split ends affect you, too! The bigger pain is getting rid of them. We all dread going to the salon getting our “ends” trimmed only to find out at the end you paid a scissor-happy stylist to give you a Rihanna bob! Well, how about the newest hair-trimming trend, velaterapia (also called candle burning)?

It’s a Brazillian hair treatment in which small sections of your hair are separated, twisted and then put under a flame. This process causes the damaged parts of the hair to stick out.

They are then trimmed and the rest of the hair is given a deep, conditioning treatment. The burning of the hair opens the follicles and allows the nutrients from the conditioning treatment to get in deep.

Apparently, the lovers of this treatment recommend getting it done every three to four months.

Velaterapia takes about two hours and costs anywhere from $150-200. Yikes! I don’t know about you all but this treatment has me nervous!

According to Ricky Gomes, a celebrity stylist at Maria Bonita Salon & Spa, “The benefit is that all the length is preserved and only split ends are removed. You can’t really see how much is burned off since only what sticks out from the hair has been sectioned and twisted.”

But I’m sure you are wondering just as I am about your hair burning off more than desired. Gomes advises only going to a very experienced stylist. Avoid DIY!

Would you try it?  If you are still on the fence, keep these healthy hair tips in mind to prevent split ends:

1. Condition regularly. Even if you don’t want to shampoo your hair, at least do a co-wash. This will keep your strands

clean, soft, and moisturized.

2. Oil.  When adding moisturizers to your hair, try to focus on your ends. This is where splits usually begin due to loss of moisture. It is the furthest part of the strand away from the scalp where natural oils give nutrition to the hair follicles.

3. Protective style. We all want to wear our hair out and feel it blow in the wind, but sometimes we need to give our hair a break. The less exposure your hair has to the elements, your hands in your hair and your clothing, the less likely it will break off from damage. Try a weave, braids or bun for example!

4. Avoid heat. Heat styling will do a number on your locks. If you must wear your hair straightened or curled, be sure to use a heat protectant spray and try not to style your hair while it is dirty!
