Health or Self: Are Instagram Fitness Stars Misleading You?

Posting to get paid

Does your favorite fitness influencers post on social media to raise awareness of community health issues like diabetes, sedentary lifestyles, and bad eating habits? Or are they looking for a quick sponsorship check?

Oftentimes aesthetically-pleasing influencers post videos and pictures to draw attention towards their brand, looking for likes, promotions, and additional clients. As a fan of fitness movements, the questions you must ask yourself are: does their content motivate me and can I relate to it?

If the answers remain no, then you must unfollow your favorite “fitness” icons. If they’re not adding value to you, then they’re on the same level as an IG model looking for bookings.

Are they really using the products they’re pushing?

Flat tummy teas, waist trainers, and fat burning creams have so scientific proof to back the results they guarantee. Leaving us to wonder if the aesthetics we see on our timeline are authentic.

The answer is that

many fitness influencers are genetically blessed. Some influencers have body altering procedures to look at the desired part. Some workout pictures are modified.

The fact is that some influencers are recommending products they’ve never used. However, the solution is simple, research the product the fitness influencer is pushing and look at what each specific ingredient does.

Were they around before the IG Boom?

Credentials and resumes don’t seem to apply to social media, but a little bit of research can go a long way. Research your favorite fitness influencer’s career and verify that they are health and fitness professionals.

In some cases, you will find that 100k followers, certifies them to deliver you information. Make sure you aren’t taking advice from someone who knows as much as you do about Wellness. Remember: followers are not equivalent to credentials.

Are they their only client?

Review the videos you’re double tapping. Are they only training themselves?  If a mechanic could only fix their own car, would he still be considered a mechanic?

If a doctor could only treat themselves, would you or your family let them handle your ailments? The answer is no! A studied craft or a skillset is measured on how effective methods are on patients, clients or customers. Review IG content with a closer eye. Look for how your favorite fitness influencers positively affect the lives of his or her clients.

Aesthetically pleasing videos of them working out need to be balanced with content of how they have helped someone you can relate to.
