Louisiana makes significant progress in Vaccine rollout

Though many Louisianians feel the COVID vaccine rollout is taking place slower than expected, in comparison with other states across the nation, Louisiana’s Department of Health and its partners are making significant progress in vaccinating members of the community.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), ranks Louisiana as 16th nationwide in doses administered per 100,000.

So far, over 93,000 doses of COVID vaccines have been sent to nursing homes across the state, and since Friday (Jan. 15) around 10,622 residents and 5,341 staff members have been vaccinated.

African Americans comprise 24% of the nursing home population.

The black community, along with other minority communities have been hit especially hard by the pandemic.

A $1 million grant from the National Institutes of Health has local doctors making sure those groups are not left behind on treatments and the potentially life-saving vaccine.

Because opinions and concerns of African-Americans are very important to stopping COVID-19 doctors at Xavier and Tulane are working together to listen to their voices.

“We’re going to be building in community forums. We’re going to be building in expert panels, and webinars that are outreach to the groups.  We are engaging the

Urban League of Louisiana as well as The Skin You’re In campaign to help us get the messages out,” said Dr. Krousel-Wood.

The Louisiana Department of Health is coordinating the COVID-19 vaccine distribution effort in Louisiana.

As more vaccines become available from the CDC, more individuals and groups will be offered a vaccination.

Limited amounts of COVID vaccines were available beginning January 4, 2021, at some local locations.
