#ItsOnUs: President Obama Urges An End To Violence Against Women During Grammys

Even if you didn’t have a chance to catch the 57th Annual GRAMMY Awards Sunday night, you’ve probably heard plenty about Rihanna’s pink bundle ‘o fabric (oh the joy of memes!) and Ledisi Beyonce singing “Precious Lord.” What seemed to fly under the radar was President Obama’s call to action urging music artists and their fans to end domestic and sexual violence against women.

Aired during a commercial break, Obama delivered a short PSA in support of the It’s On Us campaign.

“Right now, nearly one in five women in America has been a victim of rape or attempted rape,” Obama said. “More than one in four women has experienced some form of domestic violence. It’s not okay, and it has to stop. Artists have a unique power to change minds and attitudes, and get us thinking and talking about what matters. All of us, in our own lives, have the power to set an example.”

Beyond being Grammy season, February is also recognized as Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month.
