Underarms: Everyone has ’em. However, despite shared issues like sweating through your favorite top, razor bumps, itchy, flaky and dark patches, no one really wants to talk about them—until now. If you ask us, it’s about time we all pass on the embarrassment that comes hand-in-hand with discovering your deodorant doesn’t hold the secret to long-lasting odor protection right before a hot date.

CHECK OUT: What Your Underarms Reveal About Your Health

So, let’s discuss some of the most annoying underarm problems and how to effectively treat them. After all, knowledge is power!

Sweating profusely: According to research published by Science Daily, almost 3% of the U.S. population suffers from hyperhidrosis, or excessive perspiration. More than half experience it in the armpits. Known as axillary hyperhidrosis, it presents itself as excessive, visible sweating – occurring at least once a week.

Frequent frustrations may include:

  • Regularly changing clothing because of underarm sweating
  • Missing out on social gatherings due to concerns about sweating/odor
  • Challenges with romantic relationships
  • Difficulty writing, performing day-to-day activities because of slippery and sweaty hands

Fortunately for those who suffer from axillary hyperhidrosis, there are over-the-counter antiperspirants and prescription antiperspirants (containing a higher-strength, aluminum salt-based formula), that can be effective for mild to severe cases of excessive sweating.

Discoloration: While exhibiting darker skin under arms can be completely normal, other possible causes for discoloration may include acanthosis nigricans — A skin condition characterized by dark, velvety patches in body folds and creases – typically arises in people who are

obese or developing type 2 diabetes, says the Mayo Clinic.

Treatments include:

  • Losing weight to reverse obesity or prevent/manage type 2 diabetes
  • Prescription creams to lighten or soften affected areas
  • Antibacterial soaps, topical antibiotics and oral acne medications
  • Laser therapy
  • In severe cases onset by a cancerous tumor, surgery may be required.

Razor bumps/irritation due to shaving: According to experts, underarm skin is super sensitive and requires the utmost care. To avoid razor bumps and irritation, avoid dry shaving, ensuring you use a moisturizing shaving cream. Considering underarm hair grows in different directions, shave only in the direction of hair growth, using gentle strokes with minimal pressure using a clean razor. Take the recovery process up a notch by applying antiperspirant every morning, giving your pits a chance to recuperate overnight.
