The “P-Valley” Workout

P Valley

Sometimes we need more than a good sweat to feel fulfilled after a workout. Sometimes we need to feel inspired and uplifted.

Sometimes it’s more about feeling like we’ve found our tribe. Workouts are meant to break down our muscles, but there’s no rule that says they can’t build us up emotionally!

The P-Valley Workout, AKA the Vixen Workout, was inspired by the hit television show “P-valley”, which returns for season 2 on June 3. This workout not only makes you sweat, it makes you feel sexy and confident as well!

The format was founded by Janet Jones-Veloso, who left her dance and entertainment career to enter corporate America. This shift was made to find some normalcy as she yearned to be more “accepted” in society.

She began to feel as though she was playing a role, not allowing her light to really shine, and realized that women around her were doing the same.

In order to help other women feel how she felt when she would perform for huge crowds prior to her career change, Janet came up with the Vixen Workout.

The Vixen Workout is a dance fitness format that uses commercial choreography, stage lighting, and popular music and mixes to create a performance experience.

The mission of the Vixen Workout is to give a new edge to pop culture by merging dance, fashion, music, and fitness.

Their goal is to create a sense of community while providing a true experience for each client. I was lucky enough to try this workout and I must say that it was definitely an experience.

What I liked most about the class is that they start the class with a set of affirmations, something I’m really big on. Our instructor had us repeat, “Yes I’m sexy, Yes I’m fierce, Yes I got this, Yasssssss!” This set of affirmations really set the tone for the rest of the class.

We were then introduced to a few staple moves that are consistent across all classes. The class often brings us to a

pose that our instructor referred to as “staying hungry”.

The pose was symbolic of strength and determination, never settling and being our best possible selves.

The rest of the class was very high intensity. We went through combinations set to high-energy mixes and our instructor worked the room, hyping us up.

Although the moves weren’t super complicated, I will say the choreography wasn’t the easiest to follow because of its structure (not necessarily a bad thing because it forces you to engage your cognitive skills).

This could have been rectified by the instructor cueing changes much sooner than she did.

We were also in a very warm yoga studio, which probably wasn’t the best setting for a cardio dance workout, although I do believe the class is traditionally held in a dance studio where the temperature is regulated.

In all, the class was a pleasant experience and I would recommend anyone looking to get out of their head and into their body to try it out.

You can expect to burn calories, anywhere between 400 and 500. According to the class description, you can burn up to 1,000 calories once familiar with the choreography…I’m not sure how true that is based on my experience.

The description also describes both aerobic and anaerobic exercises.

I definitely got my aerobic workout in, and I’m curious to see if I get to an anaerobic point with another try of the Vixen Workout.

After taking your very first Vixen Workout class, you are then considered a member of the Vixen Army. If you are looking for a good time, a fulfilling experience, and perhaps your tribe, this may be the class for you!

Right now the Vixen Workout is only offered in Miami and New York, so if you’re in town you’ll be able to experience it, visit their website and find a class!

For those located in other areas, the Vixen Army does special events and touring. They also offer virtual classes in 5 different countries, so be on the lookout for that!
