We Are the Faces of Black Maternal Health – Miasha’s Story

Research shows that Black mothers are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications compared to their white counterparts. This devastating disparity is a glaring reminder that urgent action is needed to save the lives of Black women and their babies.

In partnership with the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and the Association of Black Cardiologists (ABC) we invite you to engage with a story that demands our attention and action. In this heartfelt video, Miasha Gilliam-El opens up about her life-threatening experience with complications during and after her pregnancy with preeclampsia and peripartum cardiomyopathy (a weakness of the heart muscle that occurs during pregnancy or soon after delivery).

We must stand together to raise awareness and advocate for change. The time for action is now, as we strive for a future where no mother faces such devastating risks during one of life’s most precious moments.
