Dr. Nina discusses the importance of the macronutrient protein and its effect on the body.
There are different types of protein and we gotta make sure we have all of the proteins we need. My favorite is shrimp. I mean, I could eat those bad boys every day. I don’t eat them every day, but I certainly could.
Dr. Nina: All proteins are not the same again. It’s the quality and the quantity of protein in our diets. That’s important. Now our bodies need a certain amount of protein for optimal functioning and overall good health throughout the lifespan. Protein is very important as we age. Protein is a nutrient, that yields four calories per gram. What I want to emphasize here is that protein itself is not meant to be an energy source. Now, listen to me, when I say that, it probably sounded a little bit confusing. It’s not meant to be an energy source, but protein is meant to be more of a backup.
if you start breaking down protein with those diets, your muscles will start to deteriorate.
Dr. Nina: So as with dietary fats, proteins are not all created equal, as I said, but in this case it’s less about good and bad proteins and more about those complete and incomplete proteins. Proteins are made up of smaller units called amino acids. If you’ve ever worked out or eat or drink protein shakes and that sort of thing, you probably heard about those aminos. So I want you to understand that these amino acids are like building blocks for protein. So our protein is comprised of a lot of different amino acids and these amino acids and protein as a whole are important for every single function in your body, every single function. The body produces some of these amino acids and we call these non-essential, they’re not essential because the body produces them, but there are other ones that must come from the diet. And we call these essential amino acids, These foods are called complete proteins and the ones that don’t contain them all, they may have some, but not all. These are determined incomplete.
Dr. Nina: People you have to eat that protein to age successfully. You know, we’re taking a lot of these collagen and fillers and you know, protein powders and you know, all this extra stuff to look beautiful. No, that protein itself is again, I said it earlier, those amino acids are there and they’re important for every single, every single full function in the body. You need those amino acids, which means you need to eat that protein. The good news is that adequate protein helps preserve the muscle. It doesn’t build it up, but it preserves it. You want to focus on quality protein, but you want to get anywhere between 25 and 30 grams of protein in every meal.
