There is nothing like a professional manicure. When you try to do it at home it just never seems to come out quite right. Here are some secrets to how the professionals do it.

1. Roll, don’t shake.

Featured on BlackDoctor

So, how often do you shake your chosen bottle before you apply? This is a no-no! Shaking the bottle creates bubbles of oxygen, creating lumps in the polish. For a more smooth product, roll the bottle between your palms while holding it upside down.

2. Technique is key.

Thin, even layers is the trick. If you start with a stroke down the center and then add two additional strokes one either side you are likely to get an even effect. It’s also important to run the brush across the tip of the nail, for a long lasting manicure. It keeps the risk of chipping to a minimum.

3. Two is the magic number.

You can never go wrong with two coats. It’s just the perfect number. One coat is likely too thin, and three is going to be to thick and make your drying time ridiculous. The key is thin, lump-free layers.

4. Avoid certain ingredients.
Dibutyl phthalate (DBP), toluene, formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, and camaphor are the ingredients you need to be on the look out for. Not only are they harmful to your health, they damage your nails.

5. In a pinch, go metallic.

If you’re in a rush, try a single coat of your best metallic polish. These colors go on opaque with one layer and look great with just about every look. This will give you a quick drying time while adding a pop of color to your hands.
