KFC Created A ‘Finger Licking Good’ Fingernail Polish (No, Seriously)

detail of finger in open mouth

Have they gone too far? KFC has been known to come up with a few off the wall flavors and recipes. Remember the “Double Down” sandwich that had chicken breasts as the bread? And before that was a the chicken bowl that used mashed potatoes and gravy instead of rice. Now, the worldwide chicken franchise is trying something new: edible fingernail polish.

And just like the chicken you can order at the counter, the nail polish also comes in two flavors and colors: Original (kind of a beige) and Hot & Spicy (red). To use it, customers can paint the polish on their nails, let it dry, “and then lick — again and again and again.”

KFC says the nail polish is “sourced from natural ingredients,” perhaps in an effort to make customers feel safer about licking nail polish.

“The recipe for our edible nail polish is unique and was specifically designed to hold the flavor, but to also dry with a glossy coat similar to normal nail polish,” said John Koay, creative director for Ogilvy & Mather. “This campaign is designed to be intriguing and fun to increase excitement around the KFC brand.”

But unlike the chicken bucket that helped make KFC famous for their “bucket of chicken,” the KFC nail polish is packaged in a “designer bottle and box” (pictured below). It’s like something you’d see in a high end make-up fashion ad. The chicken chain has promoted the nail polish on Facebook and social media over the past two weeks, even releasing a music video on YouTube.

KFC says that it has asked customers to pick their favorite flavor to go into mass production.

Edible nail polish isn’t a new thing, though most of them are vegetable-based and marketed towards children. There are also nail polishes that help ward off would be rapists by changing color if a woman’s drink has drugs in it.

A KFC spokesperson said that they are testing their nail polish initially in Hong Kong first to see which flavors customers like, which packaging they prefer, etc.

So soon you may see “finger licking good” in your neighborhood too.
