Micellar Water: What Is It?

woman clear skin face

Micellar water is yet another trending beauty phenomenon. Though the industry may just be catching on, apparently micellar water has been around for ages. Its usage can be traced back to France, where it was used by the Parisians as an alternative to their harsh water supply.

Micellar water is made up of micelles, otherwise known as tiny oil molecules suspended in soft water. “Micelles are attracted to dirt, grime and oil, and they draw out impurities without drying out your skin,.” says dermatologist Debra Luftman. “Rather than containing a foamy solution that strips your skin and leaves behind harsh chemicals, micelles cling on to the dirt and makeup on your skin and dissolve them while leaving behind a glowy, hydrated finish,” she says.

So this water is practically a one step, no rinse alternative to your everyday cleansers and moisturizers. Makeup artists and models swear by it, and though it’s a bit on the pricey side, it is apparently well worth the investment! Even better, it doesn’t discriminate on skin types. Dr. Luftman explains, “Considering the fact that it requires absolutely no rinsing and is suited for all skin types—especially super dry, sensitive, and acne-prone skin—the water is a serious game changer.”
