Microwave Your Underarms For Hair Removal?

woman with arms raised

The extents we go to to remove unwanted hair are endless. From waxing to sugaring to getting under a hot laser, we are willing to try almost anything. Well, get ready there is a new option on the market and it involves a microwave.

Recently, the FDA approved a new permanent hair removal system called miraDry. It utilizes controlled microwave energy – using proprietary miraWave® technology – to remove unwanted underarm hair. It’s not a do-it-yourself system, so you will have to make a doctor’s appointment for this one!

So how does it work?

The device used looks somewhat like a pricing gun and the medical professional scans it back and forth over your armpits. Local anesthetics are used to help keep the pain at a minimum. Taking about 40 minutes, the system utilizes microwave energy to zap hair growth and apparently sweat. Sounds like a 2-in-1 deal to me! If you hate shaving and have an issue with sweat stains, this may be your go-to option.

“Based on the results we’ve seen using miraWave it’s clear that microwave energy has a role to play in the long term hair reduction space,” said Dr. Jeremy Brauer, Laser & Skin Surgery Center of New York in a press release. “Using this technology we’ve seen stable axillary hair reduction of approximately 70% regardless of color, and these results were based on a non-optimized treatment protocol. It will be exciting to see the increase in results given the protocol improvements we’ve made since then.”

Thats the upside to this new trend. Unlike the laser removal treatment, you don’t have to worry that it won’t work because your hair is too light or coarse. It successfully removes hair no matter the color or texture. I’m interested to see long fast this trend will last, no more razors, no more wax appointments. It’s at least worth contemplating!
