Prepping Oily Skin for Summer: What You Need to Know

oily skin

Summer brings sunny days, fun nights, and quality time outside. But for those with oily skin, it can also mean an oily mess.

As the weather begins to warm up again, here’s how you can take care of your oily skin and feel your best this summer!

During late spring and summer, humidity increases, prompting the skin to produce more sebum. Consequently, the skin becomes more oily and appears shinier.

While this can give a natural glow to some, it can become uncomfortable for those with oilier skin.

While depriving your skin of moisture may seem like a natural combative measure, it can actually make your skin produce more sebum, and you guessed it, become more oily. Instead, try these tips during the summer to keep your skin looking fresh and glowy.

Keep Your Skin Adequately Cleansed (But Don’t go Overboard!)

Washing your face with a gentle moisturizer twice a day removes any impurities and keeps your face clean. For those with oily skin, sulfur face washes are recommended to help control oil.

While you may feel the urge to “wash off the oil” several times a day, limit it to once in the morning and once in the evening. If you feel your face needs a refresh, opt for a face mist or toner

Moisturize and Use SPF!

This is one of the most important steps! Neglecting to moisturize your skin is actually counterintuitive. Instead, make sure to give your skin moisture at the beginning of the day with an oil-free moisturizer with SPF.

A good daytime moisturizer will include SPF of at least 30 to protect you against UV rays without leaving a gray cast on your skin. Reapply sunscreen throughout the day, especially if you spend most of the time outside.

Avoid Heavy Creams and Other Products

Heavier moisturizers and creams will likely sit on your face, making you feel more oily. Instead, opt for lighter products like serums and gels that sit delicately on your skin, allowing it to breathe.

Use Blotting Sheets

When all else fails – blot the oil away. This can be a nice intervention when you are on the go and need to get rid of excess oil immediately.

Use these blotting sheets in the affected areas and mist your face to feel nice and fresh again!

Pro tip: If you don’t have any blotting sheets on hand, you can use gift wrap paper instead.

Drink your water

Unexpected, but true. To promote skin health (and overall health), drink your water daily! There are various guidelines for quantity, but drinking 0.5-1.0 gallons of water per day supports bodily functions.

Water also helps improve your skin by purifying the body, keeping skin hydrated, and improving skin elasticity.

Do not let oily skin make you feel less comfortable in your skin! Be proactive with your skincare routine to feel your best this summer.

By being gentle with your skin, allowing it to breathe, and staying hydrated, your skin can truly shine (in all the right ways) this summer!
