#WhiteCoatWednesday: Dr. Fit Nik

The number of African American males entering the medical profession, or the lack thereof, is having a broad overall impact on the black community, a new study shows.

According to a 2015 report from the American Association of Medical Colleges, between 1978 and 2015, the number of black males entering medical school dropped from 1,410 to 1,337, even as the number of black men earning college degrees rose, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. In contrast, during those same years, Asian and Latino male doctors increased.

That’s why we are so excited to share Dr. Nik Whyte with the world. Better known as Dr. Fit Nik (@doctor.fitnik on Instagram), he’s just as knowledgeable as he is handsome.

As a medical professional with a background in fitness, I have always believed that we need to focus less on treating diseases and more on preventing them, explains Dr. Nik on social media. “We live at a time where preventable, chronic, medical conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease are endemic in our society. These conditions all stem from poor lifestyle choices. Unbeknownst to many, our society is set up in a way that facilitates the development and progression of these preventable diseases.”

“We as a society are driven to the over-consumption of calorie dense, processed foods, and a sedentary lifestyle. What is more, this problem is worsening, not improving. Nearly two-thirds of Americans are overweight or obese, these numbers are unacceptable. My practice focuses on finding ways to better help individuals prevent disease and how to live a healthy lifestyle. I use social media as a tool to connect with patients and help educate them on specific and practical ways that they can improve their lifestyles.”

The brand, Dr. NikFit is growing. He aims to transform healthcare through the use of social media and online technology.

“I share my lifestyle tips with followers, patients, and clients through Instagram, youtube, and my website. Fitness routines, diet programs, mental health strategies, and preventative healthcare strategies are the primary focus. Through my expertise as a Medical Doctor and Fitness Professional, I bring a unique combination to the table.”

“Never stop pushing yourself to achieve more. My journey to becoming an attending physician has taken 12 years, now the real challenge begins.”
